Hey, I'm new here, was wondering what would be the best martial art for me to do and any clubs you can recommend in my area.

I'm 16 years old, female, about 5'2 and want to get fit and lost weight.
I live in Knocklyon Dublin, near Tallaght.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Sophya,

AFAIK SBG Harold's X are running a female only self defence course. You could email sbgireland@gmail.com or call 087-6768911 for more details. That would be my number one recommendation for you.

Thai Boxing (Muay Thai) or Kick Boxing would probably be the best martial art's for weight loss. Any martial art that requires high levels of fitness are gonna be good for weight loss. Tae Kwon Doe, Judo or Karate aren't as endurance based.

ThaiBoxing is very effective for weight loss, fitness and self defence.

Tallaghtfornia is a good distance from the city centre where Bridgestone gym is located, but if your willing to travel to reach your goal....then Thai is your answer.;)

Sophya. Im going to give u the advice i give everyone who asks that question - find out wot clubs r in ur area and visit as many as u can and then decide which u think ud like best. U have to find out which martial art is best for U, cos the fact is that wot may be best for another person, even a few other people may not be best for u. Only u can decide wot u think is good for you.

Here r some clubs in tallaght http://www.tallaght.net/local/sportsnleisure/arts/martial.html

This is some history of Bagua
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/bagua.zhang/history.htm

Id recommend visiting all of these clubs, watching a class and chatting to the instructors.

Anyway, good luck with ur search.

I'm going to add a plug here for Taekwon Do as I do feel that there is a fair level of fitness required, however, maybe not to the extent needed for some of the kickboxing.

There is an INTA affiliated club in Tallaght, in Ardscoil Mhuire Primary School on the Cookstown Road, to be precise. I'd recommend checking them out. The webiste also lists other schools around Dublin.

As a previous poster said though, try out a few different types of martial art, give them all a few classes, and then pick the one that you like best.

don't know if any of those is of any use but TKD is really good

Seriously, we can do without comments like, "TKD is really good."

TKD has already been covered, unless you're covering a new angle don't just say it's "really good"... seriously lads.

Anyway, if you're into weight loss and don't mind being tired out and going to the city centre there's always capoeira (hint, we're deadly). Class for weight loss because you'll never be in a fixed stance... a few hours of extensive movement will soon sort anyone out :)

The Officina di Capoeira mentioned that they have a class out in Tallaght at some stage (if I remember correctly though I could well be wrong). If you're going to be checking around clubs then hit them up, if you like the class then you're sorted.

OKay, sorry dear I'll rephrase it.

TKD, is great for all aspects or so I have come to believe. It teaches self deffence as well as, the traditional Korean art. It keeps you fit, helps you loose weight, builds up stamina and endurance. It boosts your confidence and has a great social aspect aswell. You can train just to keep fit or you can train competitivly.

    btw, I'm a girl

Dudara: Cabelo said "lads" so I just said I'm a girl.

loz: DO everyone a favour and go get some, that way you might be so much of a twat when replying to people, and acting as if you're better than everyone.

John: Eh, No. A very simple break down of my mind - do LC get to college, boys aka cock, Music, my band, TKD, fix my place on the Irish team, and fight to win.

    Sophya,

Sorry about this. The MA advice on the first few posts should hopefully be of some benefit to you.
