    Hi,

Would appreciate someone's help. I have a Packard Bell with Windows XP.

I recently had a virus and I had to do a complete reinstall. Lost everything!!

Anyway - since then I have not been able to use my DVD Rom drive. The computer recognises it and when I go to device manager it says that it is working fine. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and letting the computer reinstall them with a reboot. But all has been a failure. I can eject the drive through the computer and the drive spins - but it fails to recognise ANY disk in that drive. The other drive works perfectly.

Do you have any suggestions? Please!!

    Many thanks,

    James

PS - I have just bought Civ 4 and I am dying to play it - and I can't!!!!!!

Can you enter the cd? put a cd into that cdrom and then try to go in, what does it say? or does it enter and the folder empty? when you put a cd does the size of it display in my computer?

    Thanks Cyber.

I can open the drive etc. But it is not recognised by My Computer. When I click on the drive it says to insert cd - despite the cd being in the drive. This occurs for all cd's - including DVD's. The CD's can be used in my CD drive.

Hope this helps you recognise what is wrong.

My DVD drive is Hl-DT-DVD-ROM GDR 8161B.

    Thanks

    Twenty, try this

From that topic, I'd try this first...
Windows XP comes with a built-in CD writing service, called IMAPI. This IMAPI service is known to cause several problems and strange behaviour. You can turn it off by setting it to manual (start the file "services.msc" and look the IMAPI service up).
