    Hey all,

I received a PGP Encrypted Email today.

Does anyone know how to read PGP E-mails? Do I need to get any software?

    Cheers!

You would have to have a PGP keychain, and generate a pair of keys.

That said, if you don't already have a public key, then chances are the email wasn't for you if its fully encrypted. It could also be that the sender sent a PGP key in order to validate that they are who they say they are. I have seen emails that use this before (e.g. Microsoft security bulletins).

    Hey,

Thanks for the help. The e-mail was meant for me. When an order comes through my website I get a PGP e-mail. I had to wipe my pc a few weeks ago. Before I wiped it, when I got a PGP email I could click on an unlock button and type in a password, I could then read the e-mail. Now I can't!! Any ideas??

You need the private key to decrypt it (this is not the same as the password). It was stored on your machine before. Unless you backed this up before you wiped it, then there is no way to decrypt the email.

I'm guessing someone set it up on your machine last time, you should try contacting them. You can download the main PGP program from http://www.pgpi.org/. I know it contains a plugin for Outlook Express (to let you just click a button to unlock like you did before), but if you are using some other mail reader then you might have to download something from the company's website.

How PGP works is it creates a public and private key pair for you. The public key allows other people to encrypt a message that only you can decrypt, as you are the only person with the corresponding private key. Because you lost the private key, your old public key is now useless. It's encrypting messages that can't be decrypted. What you have to do is generate a new key pair with PGP, and replace the old public key with the new one that is created.
