Has anyone got a classic hearse or is anyone interested in them? I have a Daimler Majestic Major hearse coachbuilt in 1966 by Startin and company, it needs a fair bit of work but its a lovely looking hearse ( see photo of a similar one) the great thing about it is the coach work is all aluminium so no rust. It starting and driving but I need to make a bonnet for it.

A hearse, i wouldn't be caught dead in one....Boom boom. Only joking, the first one in your pic is a fantastic looking car, would the carving or engraving on the side be a wood panel added on or metal built in to the bodywork.
    Amazing work.

Yes Dubtom the hearse your on about is a Gothic style hearse which was popular in the late 1940's. The side panels are carved timber. This hearse was a one off designed and commissioned by the owner but was later used as a hen house and was in bits when found by the original owners grandson who restored it with a blank cheque book by the looks of it. I came across the story on a hearse enthusiast's website some time ago and saved the picture. It was a pretty amazing story and took years to find it and rebuilt it but well worth it in the end.
The Volvo prototype estate looks interesting JustinOval, I always had a thing for estate's
I'm afraid the e-type hearse is a mock up for the film Harold and Maud Silvera, I'd say you'd have a job trying to fit a coffin in the back of it!

The gothic hearse featured is considered to be the lloyd wright of hearses.
Constructed in I94I, it was the most admired hearse in Canada, and built
in the shop of John Little of Ingersoll, Ontario. It was constructed on a Cadillac coupe and delivered to the Needham Funeral home of london, Ontario. The rear was completely built of Wood and then covered with blue stained glass windows. In I958, it was left to rot in a field but the story
does not end there, having recently received a complete restoration.
John Little also built other hearses until the early 60s but this one is considered to be a masterpiece in coachbuilding history.

What is it with bands and hearses? Is it the shock effect or something or disrespect for the dead?:)

In the I960s, the japanese royal family placed an order for a new fleet of state limousines. These were built by Prince Motors and are still in use but only in Tokyo for official state ceremonies. There were 6 in total, including a hearse. It has been used only for the Emperor and the Empresses funerals in I989 and 2000 respectively. The hearse resides somewhere on the Imperial palace complex so its only used once in the blue moon...... Still it is very extravagant for a family to have their own hearse. What next, their own Lidl store, just for themselves......

The Japanese build some fairly impressive hearses alright, here are a few modern ones.

Just try fitting your band and gear into the back of one of them and you'd really need a hearse.;) :)

I do remember seing a Mark 3 Cortina hearse but it was very basic, just a converted estate. I think it may have had the rear bubble glass fitted on the rear door.

well not for sale now, but about ten years ago two hearses came up for sale in the south limerick area, one was an Austin Cambridge hearse with a chain interior and the other was a Vauxhall Viscount hearse. I think there may still be an Opel Rekord hearse from I963/4 still in service in west cork.

Have you any pictures? Here's a couple of my Daimler, as you can see it needs a bit of work but it drives and most of the bodywork is aluminum. There used to be an Austin Sheerline hearse in the town where I live years ago, its reg. number was
ZJ1, it was converted back into a car and the last I heard of it it was living in Kinsale.

Im sure that car featured in an advertisement for paint! I have a sales brochure and one of the pictures features a hotel in Kinsale with what looks like a sheerline estate parked across the road from the premises. I think the picture was taken in the late 1970s.

I'd love to see a photo of it if you can find it, I knew that car very well.

Your Pontiac Hearse is built by Superior Coachbuilders who are now Accubuilt Inc. Chances are that you have a rare car as the majority of Superior hearse and Ambulances were Cadillac Commerical Chassis. You could join the Professional Car Society who could tell you what the value and rarity of your car is. Is the vehicle now in Ireland? American built hearses are non-existent here...:(

This car is a '67 Pontiac.
And believe it or not there was one here in Co. Clare, real home made job!

There is a very clean RHD '66 Pontiac hearse in Galway.
