The new "silent" cpu fan I bought is bloody loud!

I built a computer about two years ago not taking into account the noise level of the components. I learned my lesson and have put up with a pc for two years that sounds like a jet engine taking off.

I've finally gotten around to trying to sort the problem out. So I got a new tagan psu which is nice and quiet. My PC still sounds like a jet engine.

The only other two fans in the pc were the video card fan and the cpu fan...both of which were noisy. But since I don't have the money to buy a new video card at the moment I decided to get a new CPU fan. I bought this http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/thermaltake/silentboost/p1.html

So I turn on the computer and stop the fan on the video card with a screwdriver for just a secong to see what the noise of the cpu fan is like...quiet my arse.

Why is this happenin'?! I'm goin insane.

sure its fitted correctly and not rattling?
u cud try getting a control unit or one of those cables that reduce the voltage to the fan making it run at a lower rpm (ofcourse this will reduce how well the fan proforms and a no go if ur overclocking)

Thermaltake do not make "quiet" CPU HSFs. Try Zalman instead - they make some of the best quiet coolers. (Try www.hitide.ie)

Well thats one rated as Noise 21 dBA. So that should almost silent. If it isn't bring it back. Best site for quiet PC info is http://www.silentpcreview.com/ But I agree with WizZard. Zalmans (if you pick the right one) are very good.

Celeron processors - only 256k cache
Onboard graphics - Can display windows and basic 3d rendering
    Small hard discs
Cd or DVD drives as opposed to DVD+-RW drives

I'm only reffering to the fans in the computer. How come the cpu fan doesn't sound like a hoover like this new one I got and the previous one which was a coolermaster...

Slower components dont need as good a cooling system.

It just depends on the individual fan. Stock fans tend to be noisier than your average because they are cheaply made and inefficient. You could replace the fan but leave the heatsink if its a nuisence. Throw this on should quieten the system. Make sure its 92mm tho, or find an 80mm equivalent

I think the cooling on all Dell systems is pretty much identical (except perhaps the XPS). I dont think you can say it is just slower processors, and I dont think a DVD+RW is noisier than a CD-RW.

The modern Dells have a fan mounted on the back of the case which draws the air through a heatsink on the CPU using a big green duct. Having said that you will still hear graphics card fans and all that.

I wouldnt say Dells are the quietest in the world though. They are OK, but far from silent. The 8xxx series are well built though with rubber mountings for the CDs and HDs, but again there is better.

Yeah gotta agree. Thermaltake don't make quiet *anything*. They also lie about their noise figures. You got robbed.
