pull it all apart and use whatever handy cleaning tools you have handy.

    worked for me.

Pull it apart and wash it in the sink, just remember where all the keys go.

I have used this on my wireless keyboard with no ill effects.

Take out the batteries (if a wireless keyboard, otherwise just unplug from PC ;) )
Turn on your shower fairly warm and as strong a jet as it can manage.
Hose the death out of the keyboard, removing the keys will allow the gunk to run off easier!
Stop the shower and shake the keyboard to get excess water off it.
Stand it on end to drain for a bit, then lay the keyboard face down on towels or something in your airing cupboard, or somewhere else warm.
Leave it a week or so then put the keys back on and use away!
It works well when you've spilt beer or sugary Tea/Coffee down your Keyboard, not recommended for Laptops though!

Wireless keyboard OK: worst that can happen is the keyboard shorting.

I think I would pass on physically connecting it back to my PC!

You all fail to mention how to clean the keys themselves!
Big bowl with warm/hot water then pour in some salt and some washing up liquid and add all your keys. Then swish with some sort of swishing implement after letting them soak for about 10 minutes and remove and dry.

Honestly, iv done this before and it is not worth the bloody hassle  . Unless its a very nice keyboard i would go down to a pc shop and pick one up for a tenner.
Its not as easy as just un-screwing a few screws and cleaning, took me ages to put it back together and some of my keys still dont work.

Just use some baby wipes, and a hoover first with the small brush attachment, and proceed to wipe with the baby wipes, and it will soon remove all the grime.
