Right I recently sold off my Athlon XP system which I never had any problem with. Anywho's due to various reasons the components where not sold together and had to be reassembled. The only thing different though was the advent of a a older graphics card. Now the machine booted up okay and everything seemed to be detected fine. However when I went to install windows xp it frooze up while scanning the hardware. Now I have been told everything was removed individually one at a time and swapped for other components and the same problem occured everytime. All cables where checked and eveything seemed to be in order. The also fiddled round with several settings in the bios. No luck. Apart from a damaged motherboard an Asus one which may have been damaged while being transfered around. Do you guys any suggestions to any pther potential problems.

If everything was removed, and replaced with something else, then i'm afraid it has to be the motherboard... unless of course your XP cd is dead :p

Try installing XP with all unnecessary bits left out (graphics, modem etc). Narrow it down.

    No tried different XP cd's.
Thing is linux was on one of the hard drives. and it actually worked. They got into the GUI.

    This problem is weird.

try updating the bios. try putting the memory into a different dimm. sometimes you can experience totally stupid problems like that
