U2 iPod comes with no songs. Apple scam.

EVERY person I have spoken to (about 15-20) believed the U2 iPod came with the 400 songs preloaded no doubt due to apples sly marketing. A guy in work was laughing at me saying he heard Adam Clayton on the radio saying it did too. It costs €389 which is €50 more than the standard €339 20GB player. On the apple site it says you get a £40 voucher off the boxset. In the states it is $50 off the set. In Ireland what voucher do you get? how much will it actually cost to buy it in Ireland and download "the complete U2".

I was under the impression that it was just the new album that came with the U2 Edition of the iPod. Either pre-installed or as a download from the iTunes music store... which I guess isn't much use in the Republic of Ireland. I follow most of Apples marketing and was certainly never under the impression that they were giving away the 400 song box set.

It's a bloody ugly looking thing anyway...

Surprise surprise, Apple ripping people off.

I wasn't under the impression that you got all the songs on it either. The only time I saw that was when they were running a competition to launch the U2 iPod. Think they gave 100 away or something with the songs on it.

    I really dislike branded stuff.

No mention here http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/u2/ it mentions that the new album comes with the box set, if it came with it on it I am sure they would be shouting about it (instead they whisper it to the media)

Dave Fanning had this on on this show one evening with a marketing guy
They DEFINATELY said that the U2 ipod came fully loaded with the U2 album

Oh well.. I guess you just get an ugly iPod with a bunch of plonkers signatures engraved on it in Ireland then.

Blame IMRO though... it's their fault that there is no iTunes Music Store in Ireland.

    Have a look here...

I was under the impression the point to the U2 iPod was that you bought the s.e. iPod, & got 'vouchers' to allow you to download ALL of U2's albums, as well as a ton of other exclusive tracks like unreleased songs, B-sides etc etc..... or did I completely misread the original press-release???

You get a £40 voucher off the price of the complete set when you get it off the Music Store.

Which is pretty redudant in Ireland atm.

I suppose you would expect a video recorder to come pre-loaded with movies?

Read exactly what the ad in question says, not what you would like it to say.
Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh.

ehh no, I wouldnt, and I have never heard any people expecting to get a video recorder as such.
So why do all the people I talk too expect the iPod to have it? Not a single person I know thought it came empty. Most insisted they heard it advertised as such, and were adamant to the point of laughing and sneering saying "well whats the point of it then"

If sony released a special U2 DVD HD recorder and EVERY single person I talked to heard it came with all the videos with it then I would tend to think it is believable.

I did read the ad and nowhere in it does it say it comes with the new album or boxset, yet there was a post

I thought it did come fully loaded myself until I went online.
I am merely pointing out the fact that it does come empty and want people to read the ad. My mate had asked his friend to get one in New York for him and would have been rightly pissed off if he had bought it.

Nobody has yet answered how much it will cost in total if you buy it here and download the songs. I know in the US it is $100 ($150-50voucher)

It was probably just a rumour started by some Apple zealot or perhaps a U2 zealot... or an Apple/U2 zealot... what a beast that must be...

But you are right... it does seem to be a confusing campaign, I'm sure I read that the new album was pre-installed on it... but that doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere now.... it might have just been a launch-day offer.

I also thought that they meant it came with all of the songs preloaded. Thats the way they advertised it. Not that I would have had any interest in buying it anyway, but it just seems so desperate and crap now.

ditto. definitely heard it had something like 400 tracks preloaded onto it.

I wqas under the impression it came loaded with U2 stuff aswell.

So the extra €50 is basically for a fancy colour box and a few engraved signatures on the back. Woop-de-doo, that's really worth it.

It does come with a FULL COLOUR poster... that's FULL COLOUR!

Allow me to draw you attention to page 16 of the Digital Ireland supplement in today's Irish Independent.
There is an article headed "U2 tunes into Apple" which I quote here

"Apart from the iPod, Apple also announced the industry's first-of-a-kind digital box set, beginning with The Complete U2, which will contain more than 400 tracks from the band's back catalogue"

The key word here is apart. It seems not everyone was misled by the ad.

Ads are ment to beguile us with veiled but unspoken promises that our wishes will be fulfilled. And that's exactly what happened this time.

Even the way they word that, you could still assume that the songs came preloaded, even taking the word 'apart' into account.
