One of the lads at work here said he saw the results of a poll carried out in the UK for overall satisfaction with various makes and models of cars available over there (and I suppose here too). it was in the Sunday times last week ....
Is there an online version that is reliable ... as in it has a large quantity of votes and comments and not "best car as voted by 33 users" type polls.

On another note is there an online poll showing the most stolen cars on Irish (and UK) roads?. I know there are cars that are magnets for car thieves like Glanzas etc ... but I'm thinking of ordinary cars that most people drive (Toyota Avensiseseseses etc etc)...

    Thatcham results are pretty reliable.

    http://www.thatcham-sites.org/nvsr/html/cars/index.html

Gives a general performance of how difficult cars are to steal/steal from. However, I don't think they account for the desirability of the car. Still interesting though.

German cars (BMs and Audis) perform very well from what I've seen. The Avensis (2003 on) scores very well too, almost top marks.

Nice information there .... are Thatcham a private company? did any other group contribute to the figures? ... I cant seem to find out this information .... in cases of security/safety I rarely take advice from one source ....

In any case, the car I had my eye on has 5 stars for theft and 4 for theft from (I think you'd need bulletproof glass to get that 5th star) ...but its poor in the whiplash department .... I'll take me chances.

Yes, AFAIK they are an independent company established by the British Insurance Industry.

    There's more info here: http://www.thatcham.org

Also, this might be of interest:

It is more of a research labroratory than an independent company. They research how likely it is for a car to be stolen (desirability, ease of theft, etc.) and also how difficult it it to repair damage, etc. This enables them to classify cars into groups for insurance purposes.
