This is a strange question, but what is the average energy usage of a pentium 2 computer without a moniter in kilo watts?

Like, its a p2 using a wireless card, to be left on how many kilowatts roughly are we talking per hour?

Since most p2 class systems would have 200 to 250watt or lower rated power supplies I guess that's the max they could be, as the psu couldn't give out any more than that. I suppose that they'd average about 150watts but that'd depend on how many drives, how many cards are plugged into the mainboard for sound, graphics, network etc. That said I've seen sub 2GHz HP Vectra P4 systems with only 185watt power supplies so their is no definite answer really.

My P3 866 gives the following readings on an AC clamp meter. Note I'm currently in a country with 110V mains - if I was on 230V, current would be lower but overall totals the same.

    CPU 1% load: 600mA @ 116.5V = 69.6W (0.0696 kW)
    CPU 100% load: 800mA @ 116.5V = 93.2W (0.0932 kW)

I'm using a fan-cooled Radeon in this box. For a 24/7 dedicated Linux server you could pull the graphics card (some graphics cards consume a lot of power) and disconnect mouse and keyboard (set BIOS to ignore keyboard errors first).

Ha ha, I remember asking this question when I was having an argument with my mother about the price of leaving the pc on all night downloading...

The maximum a computer with a 400 Watt PSU, excluding the monitor, costs to run is €1.032 per 24 Hrs ex vat. based on an urban accomodation... where the KwH charge is .1075 cent ex vat.

or if you want even lower power usage you could use a old P2 laptop (if you could get one)... closed up, one of them should only use 20 to 40 watts ....

That actually seems quite expensive, are you sure it's that much?

    41.66Watts works out at 1 Unit a day (24/7)
so €36.50 + VAT per year.

This is why some people prefer cheap hardware routers to linux boxes - they can be cheaper in the long run..

At a guess a laptop would use about 1/2 the rating on it's power supply since most can charge the batteries while the laptop is in use.

Would a laptop not overheat though?

Like I hear its not a brilliant idea to leave them on constantly...

The reason I ask no doubt is because of a similar arguement....
