Me and my friend are having a bit of an argument over which is the best operating system. He uses Mac and I use Windows XP.
I was wondering what OS other people use and which ones are the best?

Mac OSX.2.1 and a bit of OS9 to boot.

/off topic - omni, if your sig is meant to be Greek you can make the "Th" from "The best/rest" by putting the theta symbol which looks like an 8. Oh and the Xorp should start with a K too. That says "Horp".

I primarily use Mac OS X - 10.3.6 and like it alot.

It's the most stable Apple OS for a long time. It also has lots of nice swish effects. And not having any virues written for it yet is a major plus for any OS... on the downside... I don't have Half Life 2... boo hoo...

Out of the Microsoft operating systems, the last one I liked using was Windows 2000 Professonal. I never really like the whole XP thing... but it's starting to grow on me.

I use Linux for running a DHCP server and for acting as a server for my wireless node.. and well.. it does what it does very well...

I believe they stole the point and click mouse based interface off Apple...

but then Apple had actually stolen it from Xerox who didn't know what to do with it.

You really need an option to decide between OS 9 and OS X on the Mac, as OS X is a complete overhaul of the OS, not just an alteration like the Windows updates. And of course you'll find most people in the print and graphic design industrys refuse to update to OS X.

I got Halo for my Mac earlier in the year and didn't see what all the fuss was about... is this the fault of a lazy Mac port? Or perhaps Halo has always been tedious and repetitive?

either way.. I've given up on using my Mac for games....

    b) your friend, called Mac
    c) the computer of your friend (possibly one or both of whom are called Mac)?

I love how you accomodated for dual boot users here, thank you.

One of my friends only uses Mac's and I used them a lot to abuse his broadband. God how I loathed them. Found very counter-intuitive.

My only real problem with Mac's are the people who use them. Nut job, zealots the lot of them. Insist on arguing with you constantly about how Mac's are better than "P.C's" despite the fact that you couldn't give two f**ks.

Different strokes for different fokes people. Can't we all just get along?

    Exactly!

I run an Internet Café, an IT training Centre, a Wireless Area Network and 3 Video Editing Suites.

The different operating systems all serve their purposes quite well...

(well.... except for windows which can be a pain in the arse some times... but it's still needed)

Heh, sorry, but I do think that a check box poll would have been better suited here, as I have to use all three OS flavours for development and testing purposes.

I use both Windows XP and Linux. OS X is shaping up nicely these days, especially with Panther and I'm looking forward to Tiger, but unfortunately I don't have the hardware at home to run it, so only use it in college :)

My main reason for using Linux over Windows was it was much nicer that Windows for programming in, but since using Eclipse, that's not an issue for me anymore, so now I don't see much difference regarding what OS I used, and I'm finally one of those "I use applications not operating systems" people :p

Indeed. OS 9 sucked some great big rotten eggs, and that tainted my view of Macs for some time (that and the idea one a one button mouse), but I have to say that OS X is quite nice. Somethings in the GUI still require a little getting used to, like the expanding list method they use instead of a file tree, but once I got used to the quirks I found it to be a nice intuitive system. Overall it seems to be a lot more stable as well, 9 used to give me hell when trying to do some stuff...

Why six entries for Windows and only one for Linux?

Either way, I dual boot between XP and Linux.

OS 9 was a dog alright. I used to advise everyone to stick with OS 8.6

If just one application in OS 9 crashed, the whole system would go and it would take around 15 minutes to reboot. I used to schedule my coffee breaks around the OS 9 crahses, I've been addicted to caffeine ever since...

I used to run XP and Longhorn on dualboot. But removed longhorn. Looking at sticking XP and Fedora on, though I think I might save that for when I get my other box back running and have that setup as a server.

Biggest thing holding me back from trying OSX is the fact it specifically doesn't have x86 compatibility to keep a hardware lock on it. That and Mac users are arrogant

Aye, I understand though that PearPC is buggy as hell and you take a 25-30% performance hit.

Not really worth it for what's basically another Linux distro. :p
