hi all! just signed up to boards and v excited because (apart from being a new member of this aaawesomme community  ) i am going on my holidays in january!

as you can guess from the title i'm off to SA for 3 weeks - the two main ports of call being Inca Trail and Rio for Carnival

Has anyone been to either of these places in January? and would ye have any advice about either?

Peru - Things to do in Lima, Cusco? IncaTrail experience?
Brazil - Places to visit in southern Brazil? Places to stay in Rio?

I am a budget traveller so anyone know of nice, reasonably cheap accomodation in Brazil i would love to hear from them!

my mate is just back from 6 weeks around Sth America.
Her tip was do the Inca Trail hike, it takes about 4 days and its tough but you get there early in the morning and are the only people at the ruins for hours, until the hoards of americans arrive on the train.

ya definitely going to do the inca trail - from what i've been reading its a rewarding hike - the pics look amazing, jan is in middle of rainy season so lets hope we get lucky!

as for carnivale - i dunno what to expect - except a lot of samba :D

we'll probably be struggling for accomodation so, again, if anyone knows of some nice cheap apartments or hostels in Rio that they'd recommend then send them on please.....ta
