    hello
a friend of mine is looking into getting wireless bb off lastmile.ie as dsl is not available to him.any one here using lastmile?,if so any ping rates to us servers?.searched the net myself but got very little info other than less than 150 ms might be ok. what sort of latency is acceptable for xbox live . he only wants it for xbox live so ping rate is very important.
    cheers

    150 is a good 56K ping rate.
You need about 110ms at MAX to play online games effectively.
Realisticly your talking about 30 - 60 ms for games e.g. ADSL.
Wireless is almost useless for gaming because of the ping ping rates being high.

    Hope this helps.

Im using lastmile for the last 4 weeks have found it a very good service. If you post the name of the servers you want to use I will ping them for you, as am example I pinged Boards.ie

Pinging www.boards.ie [82.195.131.130] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=57ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=59ms TTL=57
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for 82.195.131.130:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 45ms, Maximum = 75ms, Average = 59ms

    Hope this is of help

them pings do not look bad .do you think 100ms pings will be ok as i would imagine us and uk servers would be at least that.nilhg, could you please ping tucows.com and jolt.co.uk if you could. do you use it for online gaming yourself ?.

I think you must be thinking of satellite, which has pings of around 1000-2000ms! I have a wireless connection from Last Mile as well, and I find that their ping rates are very similar to DSL.

Wireless can be great for gaming. Then again, it can be ****e. It all depends on the quality of the signal you get, and the equipment you use.
    Using IrishBroadband as an example:

If you use Ripwave, even if you get a perfect signal, you will get pings of about 110ms. Maybe about 150 ingame.

If you get Breeze, and you get a prefect signal you can expect pings of 40-50ingame.

If you get the VL equipment and a perfect signal you can expect pings as low as 15 ms ingame. (this is what i have, but it takes a great server to get those pings).

Then again, if you have a crap signal, you can expect pings to be skyhigh, and download speeds to be in the crapheap.

Anyway, it all really depends on the game your playing. If you're playing counter-strike online, the lower the ping the better. But its well playable up to about 120ms, between 120-150 you'll notice the lag, and above that it can affect you.

However, if you are playing an RPG or MMORPG you might get away with a ping as high as 500ms without any problems. The general rule is FPS style games demand as low a ping as you can get, but other games are a lot more forgiving.

EDIT: If you're comparing pings, why not try irish/british sites instead of american ones. The usual two to ping are www.boards.ie and jolt.co.uk. I'd advise pinging those if you want an accurate comparison of pings. tucows isnt a good choice
