i'm looking at buying one of these to replace my ipod but looking at the specfications here it says that

    Remote Control (no LCD): No

does this mean it doesn't come with the lcd remote control pictured?

i know it might sound as a dumb question but does it come with that control?

i'm gonna buy it in dixons so i have a place to bring it back incase it gets broken.

it defenatelly should come with a remote Cr3mo!

the package should include the following:

    - Charger
    - Remote Control
    - Microphone
    - Leather Carry Case
    - Headphones
    - USB 2.0 Cable

btw, here's a place that sells those things cheaper! and there is no delivery charge!

    click

How much is it in dixons?

When I had to return my mp3 player to advancedmp3players.co.uk it took 7 days from when I sent it till when I had the replacement. They have a great service.

I'm not sure what the prices are like on Amazon for iRivers, but their returns policy seems to be top notch.
A friend of mine bought an iRiver from them.
Had a problem with it, contacted amazon and they sent him out another iRiver straight away.
He didn't even have to send back the problem iRiver, before getting the replacement.
Though obviously he sent it back afterwards.

I got an iRiver H140 from amazon earlier this year and it was broken when it arrived, I sent it back to them without any fuss and got a new one within a week or two.

and yes It comes with a nnifty remote.

Any big(ish) internet retailer must have a decent returns policy. Any company i've ordered from has always had a good returns policy for when things went wrong.

Don't get ripped off in ireland just because you might be uncertain about the returns policies. Just ask people about the company you're thinking of ordering from. Amazon are cheaper, and they have EXCELLANT after sales service.

just wanted to make sure on the remote part of things it's one of the main reasons i'm getting also the mic in would be handy for recording concerts :D

amazon have it for £239.99 whereas mx2 have it for £237.50 not a huge saving but mx2 have free shipping. how much does amazon charge for shipping?

what's the returns like with mx2 anyone have on hand experience?
and how are they like on shipping?

When I got my iRiver off Amazon, I payed about £20 for next day delivery. IIRC, normal deliver is around £6-£7. Try looking here.

mx2 are now associated with Pixmania who seem to be pretty reliable, you should be ok.

I've just bought one from MX2. Delivery was a bit slow, but other posters have said thatthey got their's in a few days so I think I may have just been a bit unlucky.

wait, do those things break easy? I mean break without an apart reason like dropping, I want to buy one too! and use it as a backup drive!

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

It seems pretty solid, although I haven't dropped it yet so I can't be 100% sure :)

anything else i should know about this mp3 player before i put my order in... (tonight 8pm)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Last time I checked (about the start of summer) iRiver were very slow to release any firmware updates for the h series. Thats one of the reasons I didn't buy an iRiver. Don't know what there like now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

well i'm not really bothered about that really, but what did you go for instead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,083 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I've checked the firmware site for the iRiver and there's been a firmware update recently.

iRivers are great by the way. I have an iFP-390T (256mb flash)at the moment which I use for jogging and stuff, and when I'm finished college and working I'm going to upgrade to an iFP-899/799 (1gb flash) at a very reasonable £160 from amazon.co.uk .

At the moment the iRiver H140 (or the mouthwatering new H340) seems like THE best alternative to an iPod, and WAY better value for money.

Plus the batteries in the iPods seem to be set to "expire" after the guarantee period is up, just coinciding with the launch of the new iPod minis for most people, and it costs a bomb to get the iPod "refurbished" in order to have the battery fixed. It's only being noticed now as iPods are relatively new to the market.

    I went for the brown 20gb iAudio M3. http://eng.iaudio.com/zeroboard/product_M3_over.php?bmenu=p&id=cw5000

When I was looking at the H120 there was a huge problem with it, the random on it was not a true random. It played the same "random" playlist in a loop and iRiver didn't seem interested in fixing it at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,083 ✭✭✭✭Stark

The killer feature for me with the iRivers is the OGG vorbis support (edit: I see the iAudio now supports it, that makes it an interesting alternative in my book, must look into them).

By the way, what's this I hear about "copy protection" with new models?

Strangely enough the iFP-7xx series and the iFP-8xx series seem completely identical apart from different packaging. The iFP-8xx looks more robust though bulkier than the iFP-7xx. I'd probably go for the iFP-899 as it's rediculous not to go for the 1gb version at the price of £160 versus £110 for 256MB and the iFP-799 is apparently a "purple sparkle" colour!

I assume thats to do with support for downloading DRM songs of legal sites (e.g. napster).

    Still not convinced?

Have a browse here, forum dedicated to iriver. Lots of stuff on it about the H140, some mods for it etc all you want to know is prob there.

No apparently it's something to do with being able to transfer music files to the device but not from the device to prevent use of the device for transferring music from one PC to another. Heard it mentioned in regard to other players as well. Bit of a bum deal for the user by the sounds of it :( (though I'd still get an iRiver, I'm sure other companies follow the same practice).

The only other portable device that I've heard of with similar technology are some of sonys unit and the ipod. But you can get around the ipod restrictions using third party software.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

nah! I googled it, and there is no word about it!

    even 10GB ihps aren't discontinued!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

well that's good to hear, not only on the support side for me but so everyone else can spot the sheer brilliance of these cheap players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'm actually pretty sure it is being discontinued. Although I can't see why.

I see this as a positive though. Why would they discontinue the highest rated player on the mp3 market? There must be a good reason. Different sales people have said it is being dc'd.

Also, why have Dixons stopped stocking them????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

has anyone used the microphone feature? is it good quality? (good enough to record a concert say?), what format does it encode to (mp3?) and what bit rate?

Havent used it but you can record mp3 or wav, mp3 you can set bit rate. Its in the setting menu, press and hold joystick for a few seconds

I used it to record a counting crows gig. It was in the point which is noted for its bad sound anyway but it came out alright. I used the included microphone which probably isnt the best. As far as bootleg concerts go, it's ok. It was my first and only attempt, I'm sure it can be done allot better... sneak up and stage and hook up the optics maybe. If you look you could probably find some samples of recordings. go to www.misticriver.net, iriver nuts there! think i'm bad? ha.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

ive recorded a few gigs on my ihp-140. The first one I did came out well beyond my expectations, after that I just got used to the great quality. Didnt use the internal mic, borrowed a mic from a friend that I plugged into the line in jack. spot on quality though, couldnt ask for better.

If I remember tomorrow I'll stick up a few seconds sample of one of the mp3's if anyones interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

yes please, do we have a choice of songs/concerts/bands?
    hehe

could you please tell me, what is the make of the mic, how much did it cost and do you think it made a big difference as to the provided mic? I'd like to get more concerts out of it.

Just out of interest, has anyone bought an iSkin for their h140 yet? If so, what's it like and is it worth the money? The case that comes with it is crappy and I'd switch it for an iSkin if I thought they were worthwhile.

maybe if they stocked too many they wouldnt be able to sell em after christmas at full whck, now they have space to stock a guarenteed sale

havent a clue what kind of microphone it was. I can only imagine that any kind of decent quality microphone would yield the same results.

I got mine from www.misticriver.net (cheapest place to get them for us Irish) I think its well worth it because it fits perfectly in my car air vent holder then i hook it up to the stereo. It also gives total protection, screen and all. It covers ports when not in use (optical is vital to cover for dust prevention as optical works with light. Dust = distortion. It also makes the side buttons (play etc) easier to press and gives height protection to the jog wheel. Well worth the €29. You also get a free zip up pouch which is essential for me as I'm currently doing carpentry, I keep it in my pocket and there is allot of woodchip and dust around.

How much was that First MP3 player listed ?? In the first thread. In the link it says there sold out and no price is there...Any body know.

When I ordered from mx2, it ended up being sent to France for some reason. Took about 2 weeks to sort it out but apparently it was Royal Mails fault.

One thing about the iHP-100's, some batches (such as mine) have a f*cking retarded bug that mean whenever you listen with ear/head-phones plugged in through the remote control, you'll hear a faint clicking in the background. It's not noticeable when you're out walking or on the bus but when listening in a quiet room/to a quiet song/while going to sleep etc it WILL drive you mad. Only way to avoid it is to not use the remote control.

I emailed iRiver Europe about this and they told me to send the unit back to their service center in Germany (something I haven't got around to yet but I will). It's a known bug, check misticriver for loads more complaints about it.

Other than that, it's an awesome piece of kit... even if it's not as ear-shatteringly loud as I'd like it to be.

if you're talking about this one here
