I have an OS9 clamshell Ibook that seems to be sending .doc files via email but ripping out the extension making the file unreadable on *doze machines.

tried different webmail programs, to no avail. The documents open fine manually on the *doze machines, however, the users of the *doze machines are not bothered to do this.

    any suggestions?

You mean if they edit the name to include .doc?

Firstly can you make the name blah.doc.doc ? Or is that a bit silly?
Secondly - would Grim Reaper be of any help? (I think it's called Grim Reaper), not sure if it's for OS9 mind you, I have it on OSX. It opens up a contextual menu to delete the resource fork of a file. Sure give it a shot. I'll try a test tonight to see if I get a similar problem to my dozer at work.

Well that didn't make a difference. I was using OSX though.

If rename it then zip it they shouldn't have a problem since they should be used to Zip files. Failing that ask them to do a freaking basic computer course. :D Don't use stuffit or Rar as they won't know that they are.

Though it you want to be professional about it you should check your emails on a Windows PC as a test and get it working right before sending it to them.

Hang on webmail aint working either ?

    1) Is it acutually ripping out the extension on upload ?

    2) Are the extensions visable when you save it to a location ?

    3) Tried renaming the file yourself before sending it (including the extenison) ?

    4) Try changing the permissions on the document, should'nt allow you to change or remove extension name in any program if you set to read only.

the simple solution is always the best.

it was just a case of manually adding the extension to the filename.

    thanks for your help guys

Incidentally. It will also work if you file open from with the "correct" application on the PC. Or if the application is open or you have a shortcut to it. If you drag adn drop the file on the icon, or the open window of the application it will open correctly.

But most windows users are confused by this, as even in file open dialogs user double click on the file which won't work unless the file extention on the file name.
