what sort of things are they? programs, files (.doc, .xls, .mp3 etc etc)
could it be that your mouse is set for a fast double-click and you're not clicking fast enuff, or is it all the ones of the same type??

Are you using a touchpad on a laptop?
And the obvious question have you tried rebooting?

I've seen this before on the touchpads, Generally speaking it can be the room temp,
Shut Down the laptop and let it cool down
clean the touchpad with a dry cloth and then go wash your hands, Sounds stupid I know but trust me on this. It the room is really warm try and bring the temp down a tad.
Boot up and try it. If the problem is gone it was just a contact issue.
    If it still exists:
Do do have an external mouse connected?
Are you using a port Replicator?

port replicator is an external unit that you plug your laptop into. you connect your mouse monitor network card usb etc into it and leave them there permanently adn just plug the laptop in and out.

    On a less technical note,
Did you try going to Start->Control Panel -> Mouse (You might need to "Switch to Classic View" if on XP) and check the settings aren't screwy in there?

Not a real solution to your problem but did you know that you can press "ENTER" to run the icon?

Just click/select the icon then press enter
This way you don't have to right click the seleect open.

Hope this tip will keep you together for a little while longer. ;)

This could be simply the mouse delay setting in the control panel.

Go to control panel -> mouse and check the double click speed. In Win2000 it has a little test thing with a jack in the box.

When I first read the title of your thread, I thought "Woo-hoo! At last!"

    :D

That aside, did you consider using a mouse for your laptop? I picked up a small Packpard Bell optical mouse that's never given me a moments trouble. I've never been able to use a touchpad for more than a few minutes without wanting to through the laptop through a window (makes me wonder if they all have repetitive stress syndrome on Star Trek).
