What brought you to Boards?

I was just looking at one of Occy's posts and I got to wondering what brought him, a doctor living in the US, to Boards.ie.

I first heard about Boards from a classmate of Cloud's who was working with me, but at the time it didn't mean anyhting much to me. I only got into Boards after I'd subscribed to the IIU mailing list and boards.ie kept getting mentioned. I've been a devoted member since and I can see myself being round for a long time to come.

So, how about you? How did you end up on Boards?

Phantom have a link from their site to their board. The rest is history. Im still relatively new and I didn't think it was that great at first but I have to say that now I think it rocks!

I was on irc alot at the time and the lads kept refering to 'the boards' so i had a look and didnt hink much of it

but then it discovered alot if interesting discussions there also its where u sign up for montylans

so i signed up and i am still here a year on.

I was lookin for info on ir printers n was havin no luck so i posted on a few boards includeing this one... then my networking lecturer seen me on boards one day n said it was a good place to go for info! so i stayed!

i just got quake 2 and wanted to find out how to set itup to play online.
they all laughed at me for not playing quake

of course, in those days it was cloud boards or something, hence the no registration date

ps: I'm totally curious where everyone else came from though! I used to know everyone on the boards and we used to meet up for pints. I think if we all met up for pints now there would be riot police involved...

Cloud bet me that I couldnt get www.boards.ie past the IEDR.

I renamed Spin Solutions to Boards Ltd for a day and applied for it as a company and got it.

His forfeit was to look after the techie side of Boards.ie

The rest, as they say, is a lot of history.

Thats the story of Boards.ie as you see it today but it existed as a community before that, along time ago on a server far far away...

I started playing Counter Strike some time late last year and just wandered on over here looking for tips etc.

Kharn had mentioned boards numerous times on the bulletin board of www.castlebar.ie so I knew it was here for a while.

Nobody here knows me (cept Kharn) so I enjoy a bit more anonymity than most I think.

You can imagine where it goes from here. --- He fixes the cable?

When I started playing games online I was told all about Guns Islanders my a m8 of mine (Spud Vader from the orginal Jedi's) and I found the cloud boards. After that the rest as they say is history. Now time to go home and pack for me Holidays

Like some of the lads it was from playing that little known game that a bunch of lads in a company called id created back when it was the Quake boards (running from somewhere in NUIG).

Actually, I think anyone that came here from those days won't have a registered date, so we're the auld schtock

I think it was Hobbes that introduced me to Cloud Boards (though he probably doesn't even know it!). I met him on some other now-dead message board and he showed me the light

I worked for a crapy company, and our support commany 'fat bill's support monkeys' sent out this old looser to fix things one day - Im not sure we fixed anything, but smoked in the canteen and he talked about quake and the boards for ages

Well i go to school with sev and me told be about aicsl1, the best irish server :P. I joined it and saw the welcome msg with www.boards.ie there. Then on the boards i found you all spent ages on irc every day and i went there. See CS ownz :P

I met RopeDrink on some random German server, we were both saying "any f*cking English here??!" at the same time. He asked me if I was interested in playing clanned CS- and I told him I was more of a TFC player. He converted me to CS, and told me about this great thing called boards.ie. It became our refuge when the official CS forums filled with muppets (we preferred the Irish-grown muppets on the CS forum you see :P).

And damn glad I am that he did.

Chief--- (note the three ---, not Just normal Chief) was looking at the boards in work and me and another, MiLk, saw him. Had a look when I went home, and the rest is history. It was simply the fact that you can find out anything an the boards, and now it's practically my second home.

My sister's classmate pointed me to www.quake.ie back when I was thinking of playing quake2 online, when the boards were still boards.quake.ie. The thought of a huge phone bill scared me off until SNL came along, and half-life with it.

I'm pretty sure I registered b4 Aug 99 tho

Being another og the "missing registered date" elite I've been around when all this was just a small message board on quake.ie, which cloud moved to his NUIG server when quake.ie went down for a spell. Since then it has been battered and beaten into the boards you see today. But yes, all you see today evolved from the single quake boards from years ago.

BoB(TARE) was my class mate 2 yrs ago. I introduced him to Counter-Strike... He rocked at it and then he introduced me to the BOARDS. I used it when we set up KwG as "NEON"... I came back for a laugh

I'm another Quake leftover. I found the first Quake boards on a link from Quake.ie. I remember not being able to play on quakesrv1,2,3.indigo.ie one day, and wondering why. Then I found out that someone had put something called "Quakeworld" onto the servers. Apparently it was like Quake, but better. Quake.ie and the boards sorted me out. Until then, the only interaction I had with other Quakers outside of playing Quake, was typing the following kind of console typing:

unamed(3): How do I fly with that red rope thing.
[CW]Tomb: .type impulse 22
unnamed(3): .type impulse 22
[CW]Tomb: Don't type the .
unnamed(3): OK. Thanx.
unnamed(3): I'M STUCK TO THE WALL!!!
unnamed(3): HELP ME.
unnamed(3) rides [CW]Tomb's rocket.
[CW]Tomb: Stupid newbies.

I remember seeing someones config posted on the old boards. It had +moveright bound to the right mouse key, and +moveleft bound to the left mouse key. I tried it for all of 10 minutes. Only a complete muppet could play like that.

wow, seems most here are either quake or CS heads. i feel all left out

I joined cause a few of my mates recommended it (OJ, Bomberman, Lucifer, DJ Flick and Harmo) Since i didn't play CS or whatever, i had to look elsewhere, saw the humour board wasn't the most active which was ridiculos so I figured id liven it up. Now, I dont post to the humour board, I AM THE HUMOUR BOARD!!! muhahahaHAHAHAHAhahaaaaaa....

Another thing, I've noticed something strange. You stand in the middle of a library and go 'Aaaaaaagghhhh' and everyone just stares at you. But you do the same thing on an aeroplane, and everyone joins in. Think about it...
