Modem Speed

    Hi there,

I hooked a modem (US Robotics) up to a new computer last night but I'm getting very slow connections speeds, between 42 and 44k. It's not the line as I always get 52k with the same cable hooked to laptop.

I've the latest firmware and drivers installed for the modem and have the same settings as the modem on my laptop.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

The modem speed for dial up can be different from computer to computer. I had a US robotics modem in my last computer, it clocked 48kbps on UTVIP. I removed the modem into this machine and it started getting 52 KBps so I put it down to either the operating system or the speed of the computer.

The 42 or 44k or 52k is the initial speed. During the period of the connection the speed can increase or decrease, I dont think it is constant.

To back this up I am looking at the icon beside the date in the taskbar which when you hover over it says 100Mbps which states the speed of the LAN I am on. When the lan gets congested this figure does not change.

From my understanding of things (and i could be wrong) the computer (and the way tcp/ip is configured) determines the best speed for the connection . You can request a higher starting connection but this may result in more packets being dropped and subsequently in slower transmission......
