I was wondering can you get a credit card that you have to put money on it for you to use it, for example if i wanted it to buy something on the net id have to go down to the bank and put money on it then use it, so in other words you can never go over your limit or be ripped off by someone

Why not get a card and set up a direct debit to pay your entire balance each month?

Or don't use the card unless you can pay the bill when it arrives?

If you can't trust yourself to moderate ( ;) ) your spending, then a credit card ain't for you I suspect. Try Lazer as an alternative (as suggested by doodle)

I only want it for buying **** off the net, and i know some sites can be dodgy so i dont want anyone running up some bill after they steal my CC details. ANYWAY back to the original question:
Can you get a credit card that you have to put money on it for you to use it????

    AFAIK no.

If its interent security you're worried about, get an AIB Visa card. They allow you to "purchase" a single transaction credit card number. You use the number (and its tied to your credit card account) then it can't be used again.

TBH, your concerns about security are a little unwarranted. Take sensible precautions and you'll be fine.

the BOI student card allows you to use card almost as an atm card.. you top up your account and only have a small credit limit on top.. ie. if you wre going travelling abroad.. you lodge say 2000 into credit card account.. and use credit card abroad.. not sure what the credit limit is but it isn't much..

You can put as much money as you like onto it and spend it, but, you earn no interest on it (not that you'd earn much anyway) and if a fraud were to occur, the money you had in credit (i.e. the money you put in the account) is not protected. So if you load, say, €500 onto your card (i.e. the balance is +500) and someone rips off €700, the bank don't have to worry about the €500 because they are scum and that's how they operate.

No they could rip you off up to whatever your credit limit is, or sometimes more. Some banks will automatically reject any charges above your limit, others will be happy to let you exceed it then hit you with extra charges. The chances of you getting ripped off are very slim anyway, it's probably more risky to hand your card to some geezer in a restaurant anyway.

Get a debit card American Express or laser.

visa has a card where you have to put money into it before you can use it, my nephew has one, but that is in the UK, dont know if there is an equivelent here.

Well I dont think its exactly what your looking for but you could get online banking and just transfer money form your bank account to your credit card account. Doesnt real do much for ya security wise though sry :(

Don't forget no matter what card you get you will be nailed for a €40 anuual govt tax. :(

What you are looking for is a Debit Card.

I am not sure about here but in the US I would favour a CC over a DC as if it gets stolen you have at least some protection with a CC where as with a DC they can suck your account clean.

Your as well to get a credit card with a low limit, i've an AIB student mastercard with a limit of €600 which is grand cos you cant get into serious debt.As was said you could have your acc cleaned out with a debit card whereas its getting harder these days to get ripped off via your CC with "chip and pin" and CC insurance, follow a few simple rules when shopping on the net and you should be fine n dandy...

Stick to secure sites (https://), most mainstream sites are now
Stay off porn sites!!!(you will be tempted with that litte magic card in your hand but you must cast the smut devil out of your head!!!!!!!!!)
If you went with AIB set up the internet banking so you can see you acc bal and CC bal simultaneously and transfer funds from one to the other..never have to set foot in a bank if you dont want to...I find it great to keep on top of what i owe.

I know its not what your after but it seems like the best option???

I dont know very much about it now but theres meant to be some new 'virtual visa' operated by this crowd the topup club which works lime you buy credit for this vida card and then you have that amount that you could use as a tranaction. It sounds like what your talkin about - they had a website I looked at www.top-upclub.com

But I couldnt tell you if its dodgy or not!

    http://www2.discovercard.com/deskshop/main.shtml

Is another one operated by Morgan Stanley. There are plenty of virtual single use credit cards available for internet shopping.

Get an AIB credit card and use the system where it generates a new card number for each online transaction you make. Can't remember what it is called. Check out their website.

    Transactonline.

And he's already pooh-poohed that idea.
