    Hi,

    I have a Dell 8200 1.8GHz processor, GeForce2 MX/MX400 GX card and 256 MB RDRAM(:-( ) running WinXP SP2
PC is primarily used for gameing and some development work (.Net/SQL Server) and currenly is fine for Dev work but struggles a bit with the likes of IL2 PF, Star Wars etc

I want to start upgrading and was thinking of
1: More Memory going to 1GB
2: Getting either a new processor or new graphics card. Not enough money at the moment to do both. Does anyone have any suggestions on which way to go and if going for a graphics card which one to go for ?

Or I should I forgo the memory and get the new processor and gfx card(although I always think you can never have enough memory)

    any hints/suggestions appreciated

    Thanks,

    Eamonn

I'd just go up to 512 ram eamonn, its sufficient for most anything if your not multitasking. maybe with the extra cash you could squeeze the gfx card and proc. but if not i'd go with the gfx card upgrade, i had your present card for a brief period til i discovered it didnt support pixel shading, which is being encorporated more and more in new games, therefore making it obsolete pretty soon. hope i've set you on the right track.

i'd cut my losses and build a new machine and keep the dell as a second.

    my reasons being.

    1. Dell make non standard cases and use non standard Power supplies so sticking in a fairly new card (some require a power connection for the Power supply) will probably over load the current power supply.

    2. RDRAM is hard to source and it is very expensive because of this.

    3. i hate dell, they grand for office and windows work, but playing games or any other cpu intensive work it's a no no.

    Hey amen,

Have a look at the other post I just posted - trying to build a gaming rig for under 800. Plue you already have a mouse, keyboard & monitor.

    HA HA

I have the exact same machine, bout 3yrs old.And its piss poor.
Dont even bother trying to upgrade it. Its way to old.
The money you would spend upgrading it is the same money you'd spend repairing it when it all goes wrong.
Although mine served her time and shes still goin after my abuse.
Poor old gal needs to be brought out to be shot ;)

Exactly the same spec here too. Had been thinking about upgrading the GFX card & HD but then I'd need a new Mobo, CPU, RAM. Too much fuss really. I'll get a new PC whenever I'm looking to waste a few grand.

I wouldn't describe it as piss poor. It's always done the business for me since I'm no longer a PC gamer.
