    From the Liverpool Site:
Liverpool will today discover the extent of the latest injury sustained by in-form striker Milan Baros.
Baros suffered a suspected hamstring strain while playing for the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier against Macedonia on Wednesday night.

He was forced to limp out of the action with his left leg heavily bandaged after just 17 minutes of the clash in Skopje and will have the injury assessed by the club's medical staff when he returns to Melwood today.

Early indications are that last Saturday's hat-trick hero could be out for a few weeks.

Czech Republic team doctor Petr Krejei says: "The people that have looked at him think the muscle is pulled, but there will need to be another examination of it before it can be properly assessed. But we think it is similar to before, and recommend a few weeks' rest."

If Krejei's diagnosis is correct then the loss of Baros will be a massive blow to Rafael Benitez, especially with some important games looming, both domestically and in Europe.

Baros is Liverpool's leading goalscorer with ten goals so far this season and he said afterwards: "I knew what was wrong as it has happened before. I knew I had to go off straight away. I could feel it as it is the second time I've felt the muscle."

It will be a massive blow for Liverpool if he's out for a while.

He limped off...hopefully it's not too bad.
Heard also this morning Sheff Utd have made a 500,000 bid for Mellor. I can't see the guy leaving at the moment.

Commeth the hour commeth the Mellor. Heres a mad idea - Mellor and Biscan lead the attack albeit with Biscan making space and nodding on balls.

    Mike.

it also occurs that I read nunez said in an interview that he prefered to play up front. so could suit partridge also

this couls be the stroke of fortune that richie partridge needs and deserves. with kewell, garcia and nunez all being touted as possible front line replacements, it looks like there could be space for a winger.
    Heres hopes so

"Liverpool tonight received confirmation that striker Milan Baros will be out of action for at least three weeks with a hamstring injury"

While were talking about Partidge. Even though he has only played 25 or so minutes from a possible 180 in the Carling cup he is still second in the poll for "WHICH youngster has impressed the most in the Carling Cup?" on the icLiverpool site.

Yep, heres hopes so. More likely though is that one of Kewell, Garcia or Nunez is chosen for up front and the other 2 get put back into the pool of competing wing players.

Kewell has been crap and Partridge, Warnock or Potter all deserve to be given a chance of the pitch ahead of him - even if it's just a week or two to rest his ankle. Nunez is coming back from injury and hasn't played at all, I'm interested to see him play but I don't think he merits a place on the pitch as highly as these three either.

Then of course there's also Finnan and Riise competing for places on the outside of the midfield - it'll be tough to break in me thinks but here's hoping...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 519 ✭✭✭ianomccabe

yeah your dead right but its an injury crisis like this that richie needs. Its what got Stevie Gerrard his place in the team a long time ago and he hasn't looked back since. For Richie to be the 2nd longest serving player at the club and only played two first team games is a sign of the bad luck and misfortune he has suffered.
Lets just wait and see!!!! :D

Doesn't look like Partridge, Potter or Warnock are in the squad for the Boro game.

Liverpool (from): Kirkland, Josemi, Carragher, Hyypia, Traore, Kewell, Gerrard, Alonso, Hamann, Garcia, Riise, Sinama-Pongolle, Mellor, Dudek, Diao, Biscan, Finnan.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,654 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

i hope benitez just realises that garcia and kewell up front would be good because we have plenty other midfielders ie. gerrard, alonso, biscan, finnan, risse, hamann, diao who can all be fitted to whats needed.

Talking about the season thus far the above statement is not far away from the truth, but In fairness to Harry he did come alive for large parts of the game against Palace, judging by the highlights at least. It could be a sign of him getting back to full fitness and some motivation returning as well.

I think the only basis for those bbc squads is guesswork, eirebhoy. I wouldnt pay any attention to it.

In saying that there are a lot of players ahead of Warnock, Potter and Partridge, so its probable they wont figure.

There are 10 players vying for the front 6 places: Gerrard, Alonso, Hamann, Biscan, Riise, Finnan, Sinama, Mellor, Kewell, Garcia - so there's still plenty of options albeit no proven goalscorer at this level. I'd guess he'd go with Hamann sitting in front of the back 4. Gerrard, Alonso and Riise in front of him with Kewell and Garcia drifting around up front and on the wings. It will be reliant on Liverpool passing well, playing for the team rather than individually, and Gerrard and Riise getting into the box anytime Kewell or Garcia are crossing from wide. The full backs will also need to work very hard.

Finnan should definitely be in at right back ahead of Josemi.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 519 ✭✭✭ianomccabe

the bbc squads are usually just guess work but on this occasion sadly they've got it right. Richie or any of the "youngsters" for that matter have failed to make it into the squad for tomorrow so its looking like the next carling cup game is the next time we'l see them in action

Kewell had a far better second half....tried too hard to do some fancy dribbling earlier on and got the ball tangled between his legs.
Was right in front of him when he knocked the ball over for Baros's 2nd. Anfield Rd end erupted.

One excellent reason to include Partridge during this period of striking drought is that if Mellor is playing then Partridge will have a much better understanding with him then anyone else on the pitch.

To give Mellor every possible chance you want him to have the best supply possible - Gerrard and Alonso go a long way towards providing this but the addition of Partridge could have a great impact - he seems to set up quite a lot of the goals scored in the games that he plays.

we could make richies loan moves a sticky at this stage

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 519 ✭✭✭ianomccabe

there were approaches for richie when he was coming back from his cruciate injury but he had another setback so he and benitez decided they's concentrate on getting him back match fit and then assess the situation. as he is obviously match fit its only natural that speculation regarding his future will surface.
West ham, Rotherham and Forest were all interested in a loan deal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭thejollyrodger

I think he should defintely go out on another loan if he can. He needs regular football. Hopefully that will be the end of his injury worries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

Can we make this thread a sticky? ;)

Looks like Traore can be added to the bundle - despite playing on very well on Tuesday it looks like damage was done when he was tackling Saviola. He should be out for the next 3 or 4 games.

Nunez on the other hand is about to get his first reserve run out this evening after his knee injury.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jonno

I don't think Traore's injury is that bad. They said he'll be out for 10 days approx which should see him back for the Villa game at the start of December. Risse can deputise for him against Arseanal and as for the Spurs match, well Whitbread and Warnock can play at left back.

As for the other's, Garcia has near enough the same injury as Baros (1 month out) and Josemi had to get 20 stiches in his head after his clash. He is suspended from the Arsenal game anyway but he migth not make the match against Spurs next week. They havn't given an ETA on his recovery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,757 ✭✭✭The Rooster

With Finnan and Riise forced to play at the back at Kewell probably playing up front, it leaves a real dearth of wide midfield players for the Arsenal game. This could be the best chance Partridge ever has of making a first team squad for a league game. Therefore the reserve game tonight is a very big game for him. If he does the business he has a genuine chance of at least making the bench for Arsenal.

    Liverpool Reserves v Leeds tonight:

    Paul Harrison
    David Raven
    James Smith
    Zak Whitbread
    Daniel O'Donnell
    Darren Potter
    Antonio Nunez
    John Welsh
    Robbie Foy
    Mark Smyth
    Ritchie Partridge

    Subs

    Ryan Wilkie
    Paul Willis
    Danny Guthrie
    Karl Noon
    Calum Woods

Is Richie up front? It'll be interesting to see him and Nunez in the same team. No doubt Benitez will be watching.

    from liverpoolfc.tv
Antonio Nunez handed Rafael Benitez a much-needed boost on Thursday night when he made a very impressive first start in a Liverpool shirt as the reserves drew 1-1 with Leeds United.
Playing on the right side of midfield Nunez made a good impression, delivering some telling crosses into the box and almost scoring on one occasion.

Despite lacking match practice the former Real Madrid player looked sharp and, given the injury crisis that is currently engulfing the club, he could well have played himself into contention for a place in the first team squad to face Arsenal on Sunday.

He looks a bright player who can certainly cross a ball and he likes to get them into the box early. He is quick and looks to have an eye for a pass as well.

As for the match itself, goalkeeper Paul Harrison was the Reds hero as Robbie Foy struck a late equaliser to force a 1-1 draw for Hughie McAuley's side.

The match was played at the Atlantic Stadium, home of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and many Liverpool fans were out in force to see the return of Nunez who was making his first appearance in a red shirt since signing from Real Madrid as part of the deal that took Michael Owen to Spain.

Liverpool's young goalkeeper Paul Harrison deserves a mention because he produced a fantastic goalkeeping display to keep out Leeds time and time again.

Robbie Foy scored Liverpool's equaliser after 83 minutes and Leeds felt it was a contentious decision but the correct one under the rules of the game. Liverpool had a goal wrongly disallowed at Middlesbrough last Saturday through Luis Garcia in very similar circumstances, and despite the home crowd and Leeds players' fury it was a correct goal under the rules of the game.

Liverpool deserved an equaliser for their efforts and when it came it was appropriate goalkeeper Harrison created it. He spotted Robbie Foy in a good position and from his kick theball was deflected into the striker's path via the boot of a Leeds player. Running clean through the Scotland Under-21 international's finish was superb. The linesman had his flag up straight away for off-side but it was over-ruled by referee Mr Matadar. It was a good decision because the ball had gone into Foy's path via the outstretched boot of a Leeds defender.

Leeds were furious with the decision and were reduced to 10 men after defender Matthew Kilgallon was sent-off for taking his protests too far.

Also included in Hughie McAuley's team were captain John Welsh alongside Darren Potter in the centre of midfield while Robbie Foy and Mark Smyth led the attack. Welsh and Potter played well while David Raven was at right back while James Smith started at left back. Paul Harrison was preferred to the out of favour Patrice Luzi in goal.

Partridge created a good chance in the opening two minutes of the match when he set off on a great run that took him from inside his own half to the edge of the Leeds penalty area, when he was eventually crowded out.

Leeds then had a great chance after eight minutes when Jamie McMaster got in behind the Reds defence down the right and produced a teasing low cross which flew across the face of the goal, but fortunately for Liverpool there was no player in a white shirt around to score.

Nunez made a bright start for the Reds. His trickery created an opening for Mark Smyth after 12 minutes but after turning well he couldn't keep his shot down as it cleared the bar.

Two minutes later Nunez almost made a scoring debut with a first time shot that brought a good save out of Scott Carson.

Robbie Foy then had a great chance for Liverpool after 15 minutes when he pulled his shot wide from a good position, then a minute later some great work from Nunez almost created a goal. His superb pass sent Richie Partridge clear down the left and his teasing cross was well saved by the diving Carson.

Crossing a ball is clearly a main part of Nunez's game and he would certainly give Benitez possibilities on the right flank. One good cross almost produced a goal but Darren Potter fired a shot wide.

Potter is a highly rated player at Liverpool and he has vision. One fantastic pass put Mark Smyth away but from a tight angle the England Under-20 international hit a first time shot that went just over. It was a great effort from Smyth and unlucky not to open the scoring.

Nunez was full of running and looking to take on defenders and probe for an opening all the time but he was coming in for some rough treatment and the Leeds defence often resorted to stopping him by foul means.

Smyth went close again after 29 minutes when he saw his close range header well saved by Carson after an excellent free-kick delivery from the right by Robbie Foy.

Liverpool goalkeeper Paul Harrison had nothing to do for a long period in the game but he showed his alertness with a great stop after 36 minutes. The pace of Leeds front man Simon Johnson troubled the Liverpool defence and his pinpoint cross found the head of Andrew Keogh who sent it towards goal, but the diving Harrison pulled off a superb save.

Two minutes later another surging run from Johnson set up Aaron Lennon who curled a shot just wide.

One pleasing aspect of the first half was the way that Nunez and Potter linked. One such move almost created a goal when Potter shot just wide after a neat one-two with Nunez around the edge of the Leeds penalty area.

Harrison was having a great match in goal for Liverpool and produced some heroic stops not least one fine save to keep out an effort from McMaster at point blank range.

Leeds went close after the hour mark when substitute Harpal Singh fired a powerful shot just over the bar although Harrison had it covered.

Hughie McAuley made his first change of the night on the hour mark when the impressive Nunez was replaced by Ryan Wilkie.

There was a turning point in the match around the 64th minute of the match. Liverpool might have scored when a solo run from Smyth ended with him shooting just wide, then a minute later Leeds took the lead after a great run and finish by the pacy Simon Johnson.

Heroics from Harrison prevented Leeds scoring again and in front of the watching Liverpool goalkeeping coach Jose Ochotorena he must have been impressed with the young Scouser.

Liverpool deserved an equaliser for their efforts and Robbie Foy finished superbly for the equaliser.

Leeds had further chances to win the game but could not beat Harrison while Partridge went close at the other end with a curled effort over the bar.

Leeds United Reserves: Carson, Richardson, McDaid, Winter (Keegan 50), Edwards, Kilgallon, Lennon, Spring, Johnson, McMaster, Keogh (Sing 45).

Liverpool Reserves: Harrison, Raven, J Smith, Whitbread, O?Donnell, Potter, Nunez (Wilkie 61), Welsh, Foy, Smyth, Partridge. Unused subs: Willis (GK), Guthrie, Noon, Woods.

Just been watching the highlights of the match, he looks like a decent prospect. The way things are going with injuries he might even get a run out against Arsenal on Sunday:

    From Liverpoolfc.tv

Antonio Nunez could figure in the squad despite only making his first appearance for the reserves last night.

"It depends if we have 16 players or not," said the boss. "If we don't then he might come into the squad."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

Well Partridge didn't even make this squad so I think its time for him to sign for someone in January. Rotterham are interested but I they'll probably be in divison 2 when his contract runs out in the summer.
Millers boss Ronnie Moore has also been out tonight looking at another player, which is thought to be Liverpool's Richie Partridge who has played in Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Leeds tonight.

Mellor limped off a few minutes into the second half after a knock in the first, anyone have any news on that?

I'll hope for the best at the moment and presume he was well enough to try run it off and it just wasn't happening for him...
