Could this be the key clue here?
Sure it's not being caused by one of these other things?

nah its not the sofware packages we use, every other system in the building is fine ( all those running windows 98 and Me that is) only one with problems are XP systems and 2 of them were a week old and didnt have any our software installed as of yet

What's the logon interface in XP? Does each user have their own logon, or is it a communal logon?

Is Outlook Express losing all of the mail data (Account settings, etc), or is it just the mail?

What I'm thinking is that XP has created a new profile on these machines, after you originally set up Outlook Express, which is essentially like a new user logging on - so all of your settings in IE, OE and pretty much everywhere else are reset.

If this is the case, you're in luck because your mail is still intact and retreivable.

    Go to c:\documents and settings\

and have a look for two folders that look similar or that have the same logon name contained in them (e.g. one folder may be called "logonname" and another folder may be called "DOMAIN.logonname").

is OE storing the dbx files on a network drive?

If the user started up OE and was not connected to the network it might have created a local copy instead. Happens with O (how come outlook express is regularly shortened to OE but outlook isnt shortened to O?)

    just a thought.
