I seriously.. can't count the number of times I've closed not Photoshopping threads in this forum at this stage.
I even made a sticky SPECIFICALLY with "THIS IS A PHOTOSHOPPING FORUM", not only that, but I even had the forum name changed from "Pix'n'Mix" to reflect this.

    *sigh*

Moved to Work, seeing as it's a bit of a coin-toss as to where it should go.

    Hi All,

Oh, and you might be wondering since I am a student, how can I afford to pay 1000 euro per month for a web designer, or whatnot. Well I make up to $600 (yup dollars ... its the currency i deal in.. most my business partners are american) a day. :)

Ummm ... hope I didnt put anyone off... and I hope a few of you are interested. I DONT care whether your 15 or 50, as long as your a great designer basically.

If your making so much money why bother with college?

I want to more meet new friends, and learn more about computers, and to learn more about programming. I spend alot of money on programmers, that if I could program myself I would save so much money, and be able to reinvest it in more productive things like Marketing or web site designs. Not saying that programming isnt important.. it really is.

Also, even though I may make up to 500 EURO per day now, in 4 months time, I may be making only 100 or 200 EURO per day. So it is unstable. I guess it is like any business, I make more during the holiday seasons than anything else. Christmas being the biggest of them all. I expect to make 1000 EURO on Christmas day :)

I hope that answers your question Sposs :)

So I have decided that I need to hire a Website designer either full time, or on a per design basis. If I were to hire fulltime, I could pay upto 1000 EURO per month, or I could pay from 20 - 50 EURO per design.

I would be having up to 30 designs made per month, with a mininum of 5 made per month, max of 30.
1000 euro per month for a full-time professional designer is terrible pay... it's actually below minimum wage. 50 euro per design is a ridiculously low figure. To put it in context, a lot of freelancers charge around that per hour.

Expect to pay at least twice that 12K per year figure in annual salary. Expecting a designer to push out up to one design a day is going to be at a massive sacrifice of quality.

I think you need to rethink your plan. These figures and deadlines are not suited to getting quality work.

Currently I pay between €30 and €40 per design. All the designs you see on my websites cost no more than €50. I personally think €50 per hour is a ridiculous amount of money to pay a website designer. I dont even pay my programmer that (he gets just €15 per hour - but I pay per project).

I have seen some webdesign companies charge up to €400 per design, and their designs are so simple.. its unbelievable.

But if the designs were good/great, I can pay upto €100 per web design. It all depends on complexity, amount wanted, whether they'd be templates or unique or unique templates.

For example 123 Cheats, Codes Codes, Cheatemon, Boy Cheater and Girl Cheater are based on the same template, changed slightly for each.

So are my lyric websites, Lyric Planet, Lyrics Hub, Music Lyrics, 123 Lyrics and Lyrics Lair. Each of my lyric designs cost me €30.

So I am actually willing to pay upto 3 times what I normally pay, for work that is on time (can allow a few days extra for large orders).

All the sites above are copyrighted to a different company....explain?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭Fortune

I bought the websites, PlayArcade.net, from Jon Wheatley about 2 months ago from DNForum (a Domain Name Forum).

In relation to the copyrights. The content is fed from VGPro.com. My own cheat database is a year or so old, and would take too much time to update. So we hooked em up to the VGPro cheats database.

Maybe not the best decision, since alot of the cheat pages are unfortunately empty. I am going to be working with my program to make a new more uptodate cheat database, with the same file structure, so I wont lose my rankings in google.

And I will then be moving 123 Cheats (and some of the other cheat sites) off their server onto my own Load Balance (2) Dual Intel Xeon server.

In fairness I personally would laugh at someone if they were going to pay me what you are quoting. I ran my own web design company for 5 years and the pay scale you are working from is very unrealistic for a full time web designer...
Something like that is ok for a student in college trying to make a few euro designing sites to keep him/her going, but €12,000 per annum???

As others have said you are sacrificing any type of quality for speed which will show up in the end, when all your sites will looks exactly the same.. cheap and mass produced.

If you want any type of quality looking websites you are gonna have to pay more than what you are quoting here...

    good luck

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭Fortune

Speed & Quality are key. Your probably right, I am being unrealistic about paying sometime to make web designs full time for €12000 per year. But on a per design basis, I would be willing to pay up to €100 per design.

When I launch new services, like the one I am working on now, a Content Providing Service, I will pay alot more for the design (possibly up to €300).

So I think I should change my initial post, to say that I am looking for a designer who can make designs on a per design basis, and have them ontime. That would probably make alot more sense.

As I make more money, I can pay more money. I think that is fairly logical. But I just cannot afford to pay €3000 per month to a webdesigner, €4000 per month to my programmer, €1000 per month for the server, and then pay my living expenses, and have money left over to invest in SEO/Advertising.

welcome to the world of business...

pay on a 'per design'/'per piece of work' basis and you will more than likely get more quality, speed and efficiency back from the designer... I know I wouldn't bust a gut for 12g per annum, but i would for €300, if it only took me a week to produce the work... ;)

If I were to pay €300 for a design, it would have to be a damn good one. Have you got a website with your portfolio? So I can take a look at your own work.

You are making unreasonable demands of your staff. How do you expect your programmer to make a living? You claim to be earning a couple of hundred dollars a day, yet you pay your programmer and designer a pittance?

You can't make a living from that wage. You can't expect professionals to work for rates that work out below the minimum wage.

Why do you need so many designs anyway? You only have around a dozen websites, yet need up to thirty designs a month? Where are all these designs going?

You're making an awful lot of money from other peoples work, which would be one thing if you were paying them well... but you are paying an absolute pittance. This is worse than e-lance rates.

You haven't given much information, but I suspect that you are running your business in an unwise fashion. I suspect that if you sorted this out, you could afford to pay a designer more and get better quality work as a result.

What do you mean by the term "designs"? I hope we're talking about two different things. Would each site have different "designs" for each page? Or are these designs for the entire site?

    Hi

This is wolffs wife here, I do websites from time to time on a part time basis from home, but am looking for shorter term commitments such as doing up designs and letting you carry on from there, have you got an email address?

    thanks

They dont work just for me though. So I am paying them well for the work they do for me. They have many of their own clients. They do not work exclusively for me.

Also, its not different designs for each page.. It would take forever it that was the case. My smallest website (with text content) has over 15000 pages. The same design would be applied to all pages.

20hrs for a design? The most my designer spends on the designs he makes for me is 3 hrs. That'd be around 15 EURO per hour. More than what I make.

Having been working for myself for the last year, having to pay for equipment, software, bloody VAT, Internet, rent, heat, electricity etc. i don't see how a designer can charge much less then that and survive TBH.

But i think you get what you pay for as seems to be happening with your current designer. Your rate does not seem to be making it a priority for him.

50 euro a design seems very small tbh

I emailed Jon Wheatley there and he claims he doesnt know you at all at all!

Still feel something fishy going on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭Fortune

Your very suspicous Jank. And you still havent explained why. Maybe I could put your mind at rest.

I could show you the thread in which he was sold his website to me, I could send you all pm's I sent and recieved, I could setup a 3 way conversation on MSN Messenger between you, me, and Jon Wheatley, I could send you the paypal transaction details, proof he owned the name before me, and now it is in my possession. But I wont, since I dont need to. Its of no relevance. I did buy the name PlayArcade.net, the Website (Games and all), the design, and he even transferred right onto my server and set it up for $110, around 85 EURO.

50 EURO is quite small for a design, but I am not asking for that MUCH. The prices you state would be for top the range complex designs. Surely you wouldnt charge any more than 50 - 100 EURO for any of the designs on my current websites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭Figment

For that money you can buy yourself a template site. No delays at all :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,575 ✭✭✭elivsvonchiaing

€50/design is very, very fishy to me. This is less than what you would pay in Bangalore. Just out of curiosity Fortune, have you layed off any cockle-pickers in the vicinity of Morecombe bay recently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭egan007

in deed 50 euro i laughable - i think i could provide what he is looking for but i laugh at his 50 euro. maybe on www.boards.bangalore as elivsvonchiaing suggested.
'Fortune' have you any concept of the cost of living?
Personally i put my back into every site i do, I make sure it's unique, stable, compatible, functional and well supported
I spent 4 years learning the ropes and another 4 developing my knowledge in the real world - to be offeded 50 euro for my efforts is close to offensive.
You are not looking for a pro - Professional implies that you know what you are doing which demands more that 50 Euro

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭Fortune

Glad you think its funny. Alot of designers dont even deserve that much, and if I were to come across the few that do.. and I like their work.. I'd pay em more. But I have found just one of those people on this forum so far.

Oh, and can anyone show me a design they made for someone else that cost €300? - Just curious.

I let the designer quote me the price he thinks it'll cost, and I pay it. And its usually been less than €50. So its not like I tell him he better do it for €50< or else.

I'd pay thousands for a decent website, and have in the past. Paying thousands or hundreds for a decent website is different than paying hundreds or thousands from a webdesign.

All I am asking for is a 1 page unique template design, and if you cant code and I can do the coding and slicing for it myself.

Nitro Designs doesnt even charge that much, and their designs are kickass. They charge around €120 per design.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,525 ✭✭✭JustHalf

I'm not too impressed with Nitro design's work.

I think these guys would probably make your head fall off:
    http://www.37signals.com/express.php

I think the main problem here is your lack of experience. You don't understand the field you're in and don't respect the value of good design.

Good design involves a level of care for your work. A site design can take weeks of hard work, even longer for major sites.

At the moment I'm working on some software that I think is pretty rocking. Designing the interface - assuring that the user can do what they're trying to do quickly and easily - is going to take many hours of hard work. 300 quid doesn't cover that kind of thing. If someone wanted me to do the visual design for this project, and offered me 300 euro for it, I would be insulted. I should also mention that I consider my rates cheap.

If it wasn't going to pointlessly waste their time, I'd suggest you call up some professional companies and get a quote. It would put those figures you've thrown around in a new light.

If you can't afford a professional designer, then perhaps you should reconsider your overall business plan. Good design helps businesses make money. Good design is worth at least what you pay for it, and you will pay a lot more than you seem willing to.

One thing I don't understand is that you claim to earn a couple of hundred euro a day, and then say that 15 euro an hour is "more than [you] make"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭joePC

€300 for www.drinkfeckgirls.com is madness, it would take less than 1 hour to design, slice and ready for content, it looks as if a 5 year old designed it.

Here is a design I have started for fortune to see if im any good?

The correct address for the above design would be:

Rom Stud << I got an error with the other one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭Fortune

That'd be 15 euro per hour, 24 hours a day :) (not taking expenses away from that)

Seems like your the one living in a dream world charging that much for simple webdesign. Might be fine for a large company that is actually selling something.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 13,018 ✭✭✭✭jank

So you make your money from click through's and advertising?

I think personally yor trying to rip people off, wheather their designs are just OK to brilliant.
Ok if a design is **** then its not worth much, but from what ive generally seen the designs are worth much more than 50 euro.

Making money on the backs of others will catch up with you at some stage!

Nice design JoePC, do u think your going to sell that for 50 euro.

tbh 300 for drinkfeckgirls is insane, but fortune, if u are looking for a unique professional design you will never get it for 100 euro, thats crazy. The time that goes into a good looking site is longer than you think, and you really must not have a clue about how it is done. I wouldnt typeset a business card for 100 euro nevermind design it, or a website.

Think Fortune could actually get this in Asia (not Japan) where cost of living is 15-25% it is in Europe. Seems to me posts here are to recruit penniless and often talented students who panic 'cos they know their drink money runs out next week. :(
