Hey, I'm looking to get a barebones system, and was thinking that getting it built by someone who knows what theyre doing would be the cheapest option!

    I would like something like;
    17inch monitor, brand not important,
PIII processor or equivalent, about 2Ghz,
    Minimum 1gig Ram,
    Minimum 120gig HD,
    CD-RW and keyboard/mouse etc.

Anyone able or interested in building it?
And any idea on a price?

    Thanks, Barry.

That pece seems a little lop sided for most users (unless it's for database design or a server).

What will you be doing with it?

If you are playing games the the graphics card is critical.
If it's a server then the hard disks should probable be RAID'ed.
    etc, etc.

i'll Build it for €20 if you don't feel like lifting a screw driver
    ;)

I'd imagine a spec like tyhat would be around €700

But really, DO try to assemble it yourself.. Google diy pc builds and watch out for the ole ESD!

    Thanks for all the replies!
I'l be usin it for running Pro Tools or Cuebase on, which is audio recording software for anyone thats not familiar with it!

Bear in mind that PCs, while relatively simple to build, are made up of relatively expensive parts, so whoever you'd get to do this couldn't really be expected to warrant his or her work against failure or damage during the build (accidents do happen) - especially not for the amounts of money being bandied about in this thread thus far.

I'd seriously consider building it yourself - it's not rocket science, and it'll give you a better understanding of how that sort of thing is done, not to mention the fact that it'll make it easier for you to conduct your own repairs as necessary. Look on the web - there are plenty of articles in relation to this - occasionally PC magazines run articles too.

    Hope this helps,
    Gadget

You'll need a quality sound card in that case, especially so if you plan on playing an instrument through a MIDI interface.

You do reliase Pro Tools costs about €1400, or so?

Also, you WILL need a modem. You'll most likely need to upgrade the firmware on the Pro Tools.
Since your using it for audio, you'll also need a decent/excellent sound card, and not the type that comes with the system.

Finally, buy a big HDD. A mate recently went the Dell route, and ended up buying another HDD, as the current one was only 120GB (the 2nd HDD was 200GB). He's also, like you, using the PC for sound engineering only. The Pro Tools was bought so that he could ink up his guitar, bass, and keyboard upto the PC, for cheap production.

    =-=
    Rough Cost;
    =-=
    17" CRT ; €115
    AMD Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8 GHz Socket 754, 512 KB cache, €125
Cooler fan for the above processor; €39
    MSI Motherboard; €90
    1GB Ram; €180
    Western Digital Caviar 250GB; €180
MSI DVD recorder; €56 (yes, this also burns CD's)
    Wireless Keyboard + mouse; €29
    Plus extra's (glue, etc); €30
    =-=
    Total; 844
    =-=
Warrenty for breakage's; none. If it doesn't work 6 weeks later, your f*cked.

Pro Tools links up to the PC using a firewire connection, IIRC. But you will need a decent soundcard, for output. Also, a decent set of speakers.

Yeah, but thats with a brand new Digi 002 system etc. I'd be looking to pick up something like an M-Box for around the €400 mark or maybe a second hand Digi 001 for a bit more.

Or might go for an M-Audio external soundcard and use Cuebase or Logic with it, I haven't decided yet.

So in total I'm looking at about €700-800 for the PC yeah?

if you have access to another PC while thebuild is going on you certainly wouldn't be the first to run through it with nothing but online help from some boardsters (IRC might be a good start too for more 'instant' help). then if you get really stuck someone could come and have a look at it for you and help you finish it.
