Help with VGA/LCD TV widescreen res problem

I bought a widescreen LCD TV that has VGA input, now ive hooked up the VGA connector but cant seem to get it right. The resolution of the TV is 1280x720, but when i set the resolution to that on my PC, the picture becomes unstable, text and pictures appear to 'flash' and appear distorted and seem to have missing parts. Seeing as this is the native res. of the screen, i find that odd. Ive changed the refresh rate but that does nothing. Right now im typing this on 1024x768 which looks gorgeous but obviously stretched. Everything appears fine and looks great, but any resoltuion i set it to (1280x720 widescreen or any res. above) looks wrong and doesnt display right.

There is something called "phase" adjustment under the PC connector controls, which when moved one way or the other seems to have an effect on the screen under 1280x720, the distortion just changes on the screen but doesnt get it nearly right. From what i can gather, a widescreen resolution of 1024X*** would work perfectly, but neither of my machines have such a resolution and i cant find a vid card that does, even if such a resoltion exists.

Sorry thats so long, but i know its an obscure problem, so i gave all the details i could

    Any help appreciated :)

    Gary

Sounds like an odd resolution to me.
My laptop has a wide screen and the res on that is set to 1280 X 800, and I would have thought that was a standard size?

If it's any help, I'm using an nVidia G-Force FX 5200 video card

It almost seems that the "wide" resolution is either too narrow or too wide, thats how the display looks in 1280x720 - which according to the (useless) manual, is supported. I cant find any lower supposed widescreen resolution on either of my machines.

To get your widescreen resolution just multiply your resolution height by 1.7777 and you get your width. So, 720*1.7777 = 720*1279.944 which is basically 720*1280.

Anyway, that's how you work out your widescreen resolution.
....now ive hooked up the VGA connector....

You hooked it up to what exactly?

15 pin VGA out on the PC graphics card to the 15 pin VGA in on the TV
