Wireless issue with win 98: Help wanted

I did a search through this forum but found no previous queries of this nature so I hope someone here can help.

Problem Synopsis: Old win98 laptop can't access the web through a wireless broadband setup on an ethernet connection to the router when all the more modern machines work fine.

I have an office that has wireless broadband. It works fine and dandy. Lovely stuff with the win2k, winxp and mac os machines that are used there. They all have wireless cards and they never cause an issue.

The broadband access is provided via the standard Eircom netopia box and my router is a bog standard smc box that has space for 4 wired connections.

These ethernet ports are important because the administrator in the office works on an ancient IBM 600e laptop that runs win98 and has an intel pro 100 10/100 network card.

The issue at hand is that this pc can't access the web. It can ping the smc box but can't get through to netopia. The card is working fine. The machine is slow but healthy.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve the problem?
