cat 5 network cable

    Got 2 cat 5 network cables off a friend today at work,they worked grand but they dont detect on my computer,got one with a ethernet modem i bought of someone on boards and it didnt work prop,the 2 i got today work grand but wont on mine,and my nic card works perfect?

    1/ What are you trying to do with them.
    2/ What are you pluging them into.
    3/ Are they straight through or crossover CAT 5 patch cables (compare both ends to see if all the coloured wires are arranged the same, if yes then straight through, if no the crossover)

    they are all aranged same colour wanted to use them to connect my xbox to pc and my modem to pc

    Fine.

    1/ Your "modem" Is it DSL/cable/56k/Wireless?
    2/ What connections does it have.
    3/ Do you have a switch or a hub (may not be necessary based on answer 1 and 2)
