    Wahey!

    http://www.betanews.com/article/Google_Opens_Gmail_to_External_Clients/1100130545
Google has begun to roll out "e-mail portability" to its Gmail accounts, which enables users to download and send messages over POP3 using any external e-mail client. The added feature is the latest move by Google to ramp up its free service and better compete with giants Yahoo! and Microsoft. Gmail's initial offer of massive storage space was soon matched by its e-mail rivals, but Yahoo! currently charges for POP3 access and MSN recently abandoned the feature due to abuse. E-mail portability is expected to be available to all Gmail users within two weeks

You'll be able to configure Gmail for Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.

Have a look here. Will hopefully be functional in 2weeks.

Yeah, we knew Google were innovating, but sending mail over POP? They've broken all the barriers on this one ;)

Its pop3 over ssl for retrieving, and smtp over ssl for sending. It works right now, you just have to go into the settings in gmail and activate it first, then follow the instructions linked in The_Edges's post.

A step towards me using gmail more often. :D

    Is it working now??

I know there are instructions on the help pages, but the screenshots don't match the available functions in GMail?

I've tried accessing it but have been unable to.
Has anyone actually used the POP function yet?

Not yet. The "Forwarding and Pop" menu doesn't appear on my mail settings. They could be activating the accounts from now and fininsh in about 2 weeks. So some people might have pop access already.

    Free POP3 mail sending? Unprecedented!

Pity I've all but abandoned my other POP3 accounts. I use web-based email almost exclusively now.

This is real handy - i use POP3 with my existing Eircom mail account, and was hoping GMail would bring in this POP3 compatibility soon!

I've been using the GMail Notifier for the last couple of weeks!

is it not a bit pointless having a 1 gig email account and then downloading all your email to your local pc every time you fire up outlook? or am I missing something?

I've been using Hotmail as a POP3 account for years.

Hot Popper sits between Pegasus (my client) and Hotmail.

Pity they charge for it now.

    Yes, good point, rymus.

But I'd rather have the option than not.

I don't know .. I find it pretty handy for leaving a file or two I need on ... can mail it to meself from work ... or could use that handy use gmail as a 1 gb webdrive :)

The max file size gmail supports is 10mb  ....but the gmail drive is dead handy.

    So that's about 100 x 10mb attachments :D

Not really, as they give you the option to download a copy of the email, and leave the original on the server if you wish.

Would IMAP not be a much better option than POP3? as rymus said what is the point of having a 1GB account if you download all your mails locally?

More importantly, if you use POP3 to download all your mails locally you lose the ability to search through your mails from any machine other than the one that you downloaded them to. Surely one of the top reasons to use GMail is the ability to access it from any location and check new mails or search through old ones.

or am I missing something here?

I just realized this is now live. Works fine here.
Just enable the feature in your gmail settings and set up yor mail client.

Yeah, it's been live for the last fortnight or so.

Got mine set up in Outlook Express... takes a little long to check at times, but pretty decent nonetheless!

You can either use the tool on the GMail site to automatically configure your POP3 client to recieve your mail. Or you can do it manually in 'Outlook Express' like so:

    Outlook Express GMail Settings
    1. Open Outlook Express
    2. Click 'Tools' on the toolbar --> then 'Accounts'
    3. Then click 'Add' --> Mail
    4. Enter in your name as you want it to be displayed in outgoing e-mail's. Then click Next.
    5. Enter in full GMail address here - for example, johnsmith@gmail.com
    6. Leave Incoming Mail dropdown box as it is at 'POP3'
    7. Enter the following into Incoming Mail: pop.gmail.com
    8. Enter the following into Outgoing Mail: smtp.gmail.com
