OK can someone explain what the Dublin WAN actually is?

I have read the Dublin WAN site but I'm still not really sure
    what it is all about.

Is it like a giant LAN where everyone can see each other?

Or can you only see the person you point your antena at?

does anyone here swap files over the WAN ?

Is it worth spending 200euro to become involved in the project?

You need to have line of sight to an existing node. - your profile says Laois !

http://www.irishwan.org/board/ - have a look through the forums in your area to see if anyone is nearby.
It's like a big LAN party - so you can share / play games etc. and as links go up more and more connections are being made.
The "killer app" is that some people share thier internet connection (& internet costs) too..

    have a look at

    http://dubwan.tuxbox.nu/map.php

and see if anyone has a node near you.

they also have meetings [which used to be every month, but stopped :( ]

they are planning to start them again in the future, it was a great place to meet techs with hands on hardware / demo's.

yeah, my profile says laois, but im up in dublin during the college year. ;)

what setups do you have on the WAN?

ie are you guys clients or nodes?

Do you have to make contact with the person who's node you wish
    to connect to?

There are lots of different setups afaik.

It's a good idea to get in contact with whoever runs
the node you wish to connect to, simply because
chances are they will be able to give good advise
and potentially motivated to do so..

But not totally necessary in some cases, for instance
my node has a DHCP server and is unencrypted so
anyone can connect if they want to.
Something along the lines of the ideas expressed in
    http://freenetworks.org/

    But others are not...
Mostly internet access is not freely accessible.

If you have any specific questions my instant Messenger
    details are on my profile.

    Ciao
