Have a problem , hope someone out there can help.

I have a system with both IDE and SATA. Prime system runs XP from a partition on tha SATA drive - the older XP Test system OS is on the IDE.

    IDE was installed first,

I want to remove the IDE and repace with second SATA - only when I remove the IDE, I cant boot. Both disks are showing MBR's

Is there a way to fix this problem - I really dont want 3 HDD's

    Thanks,

Whether there is one or two MBR's your PC needs only one MBR to boot. I assume you're using the windows boot manager (or G.R.U.B. or another boot-loader) to manage the boot process (i.e. to select your test OS or your main one).

What actually happens when you boot is that the MBR on the IDE disk is being read. This points the computer to the Windows Boot Manager. At this point the computer can be told to boot from the SATA or IDE simply by the boot manager loading the start of the required OS.

Your PC however mightn't be set to boot from the SATA drive in the BIOS. Try removing the IDE drive from the BIOS boot order and see how you fare.
