    Hi,
Just wondering what are the available options to transfer files from a laptop to a pc? Both have USB, not sure about firewire, probably not on both.
    Thank you!
    Regards

I was able to do this easily when I got my new PC. It's a piece of cake when you use NFS. You just set up the original machine a server and the destination machine as a client and you copy across. Google for howtos on NFS, it's quite simple to set up and is included in major distros.

I used the ethernet/network card with each PC. Don't know about USB.

You could try and connect using some think like USB 2 Link cable from www.marx-computers.com . You'll find it under the 'networking' section.

need two cat5 cables and a hub.

can be done with a dedicated program like Laplink, obviously you'd need the version that suits your software! using USB or parallel cables.

you could also get a crossover patch cable, this is wired a little differently than a normal cat5 cable, can be bought in most computer shops around €15 or so. They're usually coloured yellow to signify they are crossover cables.

It's true a crossover cable is one of the cheapest ways out.
But my experience with them has been bad.
Got two made at work (which may have been part of the problem)
by a guy that was used to making them.
Couldn't get the pc and lappie to see each other.
The lights were on in the net cards, i had it configured right but nothing.
If you google for crossover help theres a lot.
IMHO not the most reliable way to do it.

    RKM.

If both have network cards just set the ip address on the pc to 192.168.1.200 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 then set the ip address on the laptop to 192.168.1.201 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 they should be able to see each other then, so just share what ever folder you want to transfer.

i do this every day using a crossover. just set up the ips and a similar subnet mask and then choose "view workgroup computers". Should work as long as the laptop and pc are on the same workgroup.

    Hi again
Thanks for all the replies, turns out all that has to be transferred is a folder so I'm just gonna use my H-140 to do it:)
    Thanks again!
