How are Zhivago and Redlight fine when it's entirely possible to pay over 20 quid for a new release? On many other things, I'd be inclined to support the local retailer, but not on a commodity good like CDs.

I've always found golden discs to be the best value.
selection isn't as good but im lookin at the bottom line :D
competition is always good, or so they say,
look what it did for compustore in Galway. ;)

At last a bit of competition for the O'carrols and the Hubbards....they had a nice cosy cartel for themselves in Galway for the past 20 odd years....about time we get a "real" and "professional" music store in Galway!!!

Have HMV actually opened, or just applied for Planning Permission?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭dwayneburke

the signs are up and the fixtures and fittings are being put in...opening should be any day now

    Where exactly?

I think that this is just another example of our stupid, stupid planning laws. Why is a huge British chain allowed to open in Galway? Our own local traders should be protected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭dwayneburke

i agree our local traders should be protected but a lot of our local traders have been screwing us on prices for the last few years so its about time they either lower prices to survive or bow out....even though im very against english-izing shop street etc...

Its opening beside topshop on the way into edward square...

Because it would be shockingly illegal to *not* allow them to open?

Robbo...things and places change,,,,,galway is practically made its living outta tourists so "It's a local street, for local people..." just does not work....

    One word """""COMPETITION""""

BTW look at lidl and aldi compared to Tesco....its good for the average schmo...

Students may be seasonal, annoying and ignorant to all forms of common sense, but they're not tourists.

So that's another Music store I don't buy from. Excellent.

    Buy online people.

Like Karl said just buy online. It makes sense.

For example: I have just purchased 3 DVDS (Spiderman 2, The Bourne Supremacy, Chronnicles of Riddick) and 1 Book (The Bourne Trilogy).
    Total Price = 65 euros.

In any high street retailer the total price would be at least 90 euro and proborably higher.

Well, actually, go to HMV Careers and click 'Tempoary seasonal Staff' and I've applied for a position in 'Galway'! ;) No confirmation on whe it's opening though!

Agreed students spend a fair amount of money (BEER) but i was thinking of those fairly large, green jumper, paddy hat wearing yanks and our european neighbours...

Anyway i wont be buying from HMV apart from the late Xmas present as mentioned above online is the only way to go....Good to waste a few mins during the lunch break though then head back to the office and buy online

They said that there would be more positions available next month and they'ed ring me.

I worked for HMV in Grafton St and Cork. I found them to be one of the worst employers I have ever had. To be fair though my cd collection was massive from the time I worked there, but its the other things like; Getting paid monthly. In 2000 when I was there I was paid £800 a month. Very difficult to live on. A friend of mine who started in there Oxford St branch in London was with them for 7 years and NEVER got promoted. He was extremely good at his job.
I was told by my Doctor in Cork that I had to stop working there as I was about to have a nervous breakdown! at the age of 20!
And when my friend and I parted company with HMV, our employee files apparently have a lovely big red sticker on the front which states: Unsuitable for re-employment!
Oh, and its also company policy to not give references, which my friend didn't know about. So his cv has a 7 year gap.

    Hi

Opened in galway today so just wondering does a normal 3rd level student card work or do i have to sign up for their own brand card to avail of the 10% off?

    Tks

Normal ID is fine as long as it's USIT or your college ID.

Well, it's a huge improvement on Compustore anyway... wonder what the pay is like there? More info here And the crazy drive in cinema/roller skating attendent thing is here

Compared to Compustore, PC World may be the lesser of two evils but there's really not that much between them ;( I've always found it to be way over priced compared to the likes of komplett.ie, etc.. - even when taking shipping costs into account.

Sometimes they've got some decent special offers though - maybe some nice opening specials? Will be interesting to check it out anyway - any defininte opening date yet?
It'll be handy having a dedicated computer store in Galway though, since the closest we've got now is Currys and a few tiny shops.

Had a look at HMV , Zhivago are d0000000med !

If they drop their prices to HMV levels I will never go near them again anyway, it shows how much they have been ripping people off for all along .

There's certainly a nice selection of stuff there. I can see myself going there every now and again. Especially if there's a good sale on.

    A HMV in Galway :P

I work in the HMV in the Blanchardstown Centre, Dublin. Well I guess its a well enough place to work. Wages are good at 8.20 starting wage which goes up to 9.20 after 3 months (which I have yet to recieve  ) The staff discount is 30% which is ok I guess.

That 10% student discount is a waste of time as well by the way. 10% is nothing anyway

Staff in general are nice but some of the full timers are cranky, rude and arrogant. While there's one guy in the security team who I absolutely despise...

But anyway, I presonally would shop around before buying in HMV. Again online is your best bet - even HMV.co.uk is cheaper than Irish HMV stores.
    They mark up the prices.

We are selves are doing fantastic business in our store. Where the biggest sales volume wise in the republic (at least second anyway). We are targeted to make 2.6m over christams. we will probably break i guess. Also the Irish region is the most profitable in the entire HMV group :P

HMV also own Waterstones and that Hoges Figgis Store

Also, watch out for that "buy one get one free promotion". Load of tat I say. A lot of those dvds (eg Schindlers list) where 15 euro last month...this month its buy one get on free. You buy the dearer one of coarse. Schindlers list is now at its rrp of 39.99. So in essence your not only paying for the free dvd but paying a lot more besides. Christmas is great for business :)

My rant about HMV.....I have to go to work now....

Was in HMV on friday and i have to say im impressed! Used the student discount, and got two cds (Declan O'Rourke and Razorlight) for €27.
That works out at €13.50 each, dont think you would get them for much cheaper than that including buying online.
10% off is nothing!!! Ehhh what the hell, its not bad at all, dont see any other music shop giving us scabby students any offers!! :D

did you use your college id with the hmv card ? or was your college id enuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭Im_No_Superman

College id and the hmv student card. You just have to ask for the hmv card at the counter and bobs your uncle 10% off heaven!!!

Unless you used All Of MP3 and paid about €0.25 to download an album... no CD, but after you download 5, you've saved enough to buy a CD burner and 5 blank discs!

What can you say...same oul crap as any Zhivagos or Red Light Records etc. only they double up on their displays....big disappointment

Wehn I was there on Sunday the basement was closed off. Is this all the time or are they still building it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭dwayneburke

I think its pretty terrible altogether. I payed 60 for the Return of The King EE Collector's Box Set in Game, and it was 70 in HMV. Recently got a few CDs in Zhivagos, and all of which were far cheaper than yonder HMV prices.

Seen an ad on the telly last night:

Lord of the Rings: Return opf the King EE: €34.99 in HMV :o And that's on TV3 as "HMV Deal of the Week"

though i hate to ditch HMV and believe that people in galway should get over Zhivagos please note the "...of the Week" part of that. after this week it shall go back ot its original price what ever that may be for the after christmas insanity more favourably known as the sales
