    Right,

Just got my Eircom broadband gear (well its still in the post office but its there to get).

Now my question is, how do I set it up so my flatmate and I can both access it at the same time if necessary? Do i need hubs and all this gear or can I just plug a couple of couples in and bobs your mothers brother? Bearing in mind that I'd be using my desktop upstairs and he's using his laptop downstairs.

You may, or may not, have noticed that my tech knowledge is sadly lacking.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Chris

You'll need to get your hands on a hub. NAT will be enabled by default on the Eircom box, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The hub they give ya allows you to connect one computer via USB and the other via ethernet (provided you have a LAN card which one of the computers prob do)

Running cable upstairs can be a real pain in the arse. I did it for one room, but when I needed it in a second room I just went wireless. If I were you I'd get a wireless card for the laptop and a wireless access point. For a few quid more you can usually get an access point that is also a hub/switch, so you have room to connect a games console or a few more PC's if needs be.

get yourself a 4 port wireless router I got one from komplett one I got was teh 3com for about 92 yoyo's ... along with a usb wireless nic about 50 yoyo's having a load of nasty cabling running through the house is a nightmare ... especially on stairs after a pint or two ...

if you're into a bit of lan gaming its nice too to have the extra spare few ports if friends call over ...

get yourself a decent firewall as well ... zonealarm and some spyware stuff you probably know this already though :)

Ok that sounds like an option then, I've god a built in lan card in my motherboard so presumably I can use the ethernet then and he can use the usb.

Whats the difference in speed or anything? Is there any?

    Cheers lads.

    Ahhh an extra 140 bangers!

Thats a bit more than we want to spend though, might go that way a couple of months down the line seeing how we go.

All i want is to try out these MMORPG boys, fancy a bit of Star War's Galaxies and speed up access to some of eh the eh "special interest" websites.
