After reading an interesting opinion piece in the New York Times on the death of the Enlightenment in the US (after yesterday's news) I decided that it's time I did some reading up on the Age of Enlightenment.

Can anyone suggest a good book on this period?

I am looking for something that is non-academic but gives a run through of the main philisophical and scientific ideas that were developed.

Thanks for any help with this.

    Try this:

The Enlightenment: The Science of Freedom by Peter Gay

Actually it comes in two volumes.

Try Cosmos by Carl Sagan, if you haven't read it.

    Fantastic book.

    Hmm,
"The Enlightenment: The Science of Freedom" is seriously out of print, and "Cosmos" I have read and is not really about the enlightenment.
    But thanks for the suggestions.
