Hi I intend going off travelling the world next year and want to splash out on an execellent camera to bring with me. I have read that the 20d is a very good camera. And on ebay I have found the following kit. Could sombody who knows about photography tell me if this would be a good buy.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43454&item=3849938179&rd=1

    Thanks in advance
    John.

It certainly looks like a good deal - but it may be worth waiting till nearer your holidays to see if the price comes down, or indeed starting your trip somewhere like Hong Kong or NY where you can get a cheap camera..?

It's coming in for the states so prepare to pay a s**t load of duty. They are checking stuff like hawks now.

Ebay is good but ask the seller a lot of questionS about shipping time, payment options and the like to ensure that they are who they say they are. There is a lot of "ebay user jacking" going on (this is where they can rob your username and password and they sell items at low price to make a killing quickly).

the seller has listed nikon lenses with that d20, plus there's a whole load of crap you don't need thrown in. His account doesn't seem to be hijacked but I'd find out what the 'wide angle' lens actually is and why he has the nikon lenses there. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

edit: actually, just avoid. listed with 1gb ahd 2gb cf card, the whole thing is full of mistakes.

the rule I normally stick to with ebay is... dont buy anything I cant afford to recoup the loss of.

if I buy a $30 item, it doesnt really matter too much if it never turns up. I'd be pissed off sure, but imagine how much more you'd be pissed off if a $1,500 item never turned up!

When I buy my 20D, I'll either get it from Amazon in the UK (where it currently comes in at around €1,600) or from the likes of Cam Ireland or NY Camera.

Slightly off topic here, but has anyone successfully ordered a 20D from Cam-Ireland?

don't buy a D20 if you don't know much about SLR's or you're just wasting your money on a camera with features you don't need.

If you're travelling weight will be an issue surely? What experience have you with cameras and digital cameras?

DotOrg made a very valid point. If you are travelling the world chances are you will be backpacking it like 90% of the folks and not doing it on luxury cruises etc. A camera like this is just going to:
a: Be big annoying and awkward
b: A target for thieves too.

Maybe as a good photography camera this is the way forward but personally I wouldn't like to be carrying my life on my back and then having to worry about my big camera adding extra weight aswell

It seems like overkill to me.
Unless it's not a backpacking trip you're going on.
Ideally you'd want something compact, 4 Megapixel or more, nice lens and a good zoom.
The Kodak DX7590 is a really nice camera.
I have the DX6490 and it's also very good.
I won't reel off a list of specs.
