  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

to keep up to date on your posts and others

Well, there was a RSS feed or something like that that you could see the last few posts but individually showing each users details constantly updating would probably increase the bandwidth usage quite a lot.

Nice Idea but it would probably murder the mysql server with all those extra queries.

there is a boards ticker knocking about some where that can run in your toolbar with stuff on latest threads, or i think you can set it to latest threads which you are subscribed to and such

    edit - try here

do you think it would be a good idea if it was to be released as a beta. very simple. I think it would really take off!

Well, i think that this would be very successful!

Hate to point out but you seem to be alone there.

A toolbar would be pretty pointless, really. What would it have besides a "PM" notifier and a boards.ie search button? I love boards and all... but it's no google (yet :D)

It could also show the latest post that you responded to that has had another response.

    Great Ideo

No not really. Whenever I'm online I always have Boards open. Prob not alone in this. Don't think there is a need for it.

TBH Youssef, I applaud and empathise with your enthusiasm, but all of these things can be solved by creating a new toolbar in your browser, and filling it with links to the relevant pages, like I do.

The top of each page tells you your PM status, so I don't think that's so important.

i always have a boards.ie window open when im online. might be handy for the odd occasion that im not on boards, or even if you were to add a login/logout field to it?

I would like to thank Y o u s s e f for volunteering to sacrifice his spare time to develop the Boards toolbar. We all look forward to seeing the beta.

Yeah thanks Youssef! Can you make a Firefox one too while you are at it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

probably be better off making a firefox one instead of an IE one.

the majority of people seem to use FF here. (me included)

If you are so confident that it would be successful why don't you just make one, and then ask what people think of it. If you have access to Visual Studio 6 or VS .NET then it shouldn't be too difficult, see here for an introduction to coding an IE toolbar.

Unless of course you are looking for somebody else to code it for you ;)

    Hey Guys & Gals,

Hey I think Fragile should give it a shot?
I just thought that this would be a handy tool for mods and users! It could have more features as well! Any suggestions on what it could include!?

Thanks For all the feedback! :D;)

    I'm for the sidebar idea

would be very handy and certainly easier make then a IE toolbar
    :D

If there be enough interested I could give it a shot

It may well be, but you've gotta sell it to us! Show us a prototype (and a pic wont cut the mustard on this one).

Thanks yossarin for pointing out the firefox search extension, could come in useful sometime!

Actually did a few. Think its still in my sig. If you want to make a toolbar then go for it. I'd suggest Firefox as XUL is painless to use and faster.

    Ok pondering this.

TBH a toolbar at least in firefox would be pointless. You already have the boards.ie search engine for firefox so removes that from your piccy.

PM option I could probably do up a status bar link that queries every 10 minutes (would need help from admins though). But unless you get PM's frequently I don't see a point to it. But thats just me.

The last four parts on the picture are pointless as they can be created by bookmarks. You can even link to the RSS feed (Live Bookmark) that boards.ie does and that will give you live list of active topics in the firefox bar.

What I might do is create a basic boards.ie plugin package (Searches, wiki, PMs, RSS and bookmark links and anything of note). Not guaranteeing anything though.
