BitTorrent - what are good speeds?

I recently installed ABC (Yet Another Bittorrent Client), version 2.6.9.
I've been using http://www.suprnova.org to get torrent links.
I am on ntl broadband on 1.5mbps package. My router firewall is set to port forward those used by ABC.

Frequently my download rates are less than 10kB/s. Right now I have an all-time record of 50kB/s, though dropping as I write. My non-torrent download speeds are great so this is not influencing things.

What tips do people have to get better rates? Different website for links?
What client settings influence download speed?

there is a no good answer for this ive used bittorrent i it was much of the same it depends on the amount of people downloading the same file and how many seeds there is i would normally get 10k and then again if i was downloading a file from the likes of a hardware site "like drivers" the speed would be 50k and ive noticed that the smaller the files you dl on suprnova the higher the speeds ....so in other words your not alone ...cos i dont have a clue either :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,659 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

    my average is 40kb

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 807 ✭✭✭ViperVenoM

depends how popular the file is..i use that client too

my max download speed is about 190kb/s
on torrent ive had 170 a few times..so i wont moan

as long as the files are green..well the text then everythings good..if they are yellow then you havent set the firewall up properly (like ive done  ) and that would explain your 10kbps

so if there all green its all good at your end..maybe it just isnt a popular file?

    anytime i'm downloading i always get 7kb/sec

which is fine for isdn 64k

    thats very good speed
I be happy if I get more than 30k, most the time 25k
really depends on seeds and peers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

the green light is god. once i have that i don't worry and realise what ever speed i get is due to seeds and peers.

i get 50kb/s regularly though just like if i was downloading something that wasn't through BT

I get about 310kB/sec max, but that should go up when they upgrade my connection for free next month. Make sure you throttle the upload speeds (but not too much) to get the max DL speed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 807 ✭✭✭ViperVenoM

i think id die with anything less than my 170kb/s...you know how long it takes to download a 34gb file!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,415 ✭✭✭Optikus

Its all down to the seeds and peers of the torrent your downloading. in some cases constant really bad speed could be as mentioned caused by incorrectly configured firwalls and networks.

not much point in saying how fast you can download if you dont say what speed your line is....
someone gets 310k/sec... on what sort of connection????

if your download speeds on bit-torrent are crap, you might not have your firewall/router confiugred properly.

I'm also on NTL 1.5MB broadband. There's not much you can do to get better speeds it just depends on what you are downloading. I get the same problem that you do and thought that maybe NTL where blocking some ports.

I just did a test to check this out and it is something that you can try aswell

Download 2 popular torrents and see what speed you reach. Try the 2 I use in my screenshot. As you can see the download speed is 175KBps

Its the torrent and not NTL

Got 50K constant yesterday when getting one file, but only ~8-9K on another one, even though they had the same tracker and the Seed/Leech counts were similar for both files.

Changes from torrent to torrent, but overall, I like it.

I've changed recently from using BitTornado to BitComet.

What ports need forwarding with Azureus to get a green light?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

You use suprnova and hence, get crappy speeds because it's public.

try 6881-6999 then get BT to look in that direction

i use nova..and get 170  im not complaining i know of quite a few places to get torrents but i find nova "usually" has everything i need so it aint down to where u get the torrents from its just however many people have it..and as nova is public therefore more users = faster...or imo anyway i get 10kb/s off some non public torrents

The 2 torrents in my test where taken from Suprnova :D

Using Azureus here and normaly get 40-60kb downloads. Suprnova sucks for speed so dont blame such low speeds on your client.

    Hi

Does anyone know how to forward ports on a Cayman Netopia 3341 (standard issue Eircom broadband modem)?
FYI - I am using BitTornado which seems to randomise the ports and then attempt to use UPnP to forward them.
The light on the client is always yellow. The fastest download I have ever had was 52k. Frequently they are about 2 - 5k.

    Flame on !

You know it's really really fast if you walk into the shop and buy the stuff.
Cant stand people moaning about how slow it is to steal warez.

Why you all blaming Suprnova.. don't you have a clue how torrents work, Suprnova just like a lot of other sites, has links to the torrents its nothing to do with the site its the torrent and its tracker and the amount of peers and seeds.
You can make a torrent get a tracker and post it on all of these site, the only thing people will be downloading from the site is the torrent info so your client can connect to the tracker/s which has nothing to do with the site at all.

Let me clarify. The users on Suprnova rather than the site suck due to lack of people seeding once their download is complete. Private trackers are much better as folks tend to hang around to get a 100% upload rato and hence the speeds are faster due to more seeders. Suprnova therefore is not a site you can get fast downloads from in most cases.

Its against the rules of this forum for me or anyone else to post a link to torrent sites. Use google and a little brain cells to work out for your self where the good and bad sites are.

    Or dont.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,415 ✭✭✭Optikus

Its nothing to do with Suprnova, its The Subbmitter of the Torrent. It just depends on the trackers, just because Suprnova users don't seed you are still using the same trackers. Most of the time the good sites that make trackers all have to seed at least once so if your using that tracker there will be seeds dosent make a difference where you got the link from. Suprnova just displays links the users of the site make no difference its the submitters and their trackers.

Why do I have to scroll across the window to read your posts, it's kind of annoying, I'd say it's something to do with your profile, everyone else's posts are normal looking.

you cant say the torrents site sux, its the users that dont seeds sux big time

Thanks - very concise and helpful.

Strangely enough when you search this board for "netopia cayman bittorrent" it says "no matches"

Venom could you PM me a Private Tracker site. :) Or is a Private Tracker site just one of those forums you register with that has only a few torrent files on it?

with reference to the posters above i had the same issues with BT initially getting the green light and once i got it sorted via a guide like doodle-sketch it was all good. nice guide doodle-sketch. i found the pinhole over nat the solution to a number of problems since such as being able to host direct connect internet games, running an ftp server and getting DCC to work on irc.

gangsta i'm not sure how it works for all bit torrent clients but i use bit tornado and once i forwarded ports using the method above i had to go into options in it and get it to use that port range

    data

Yeah, sure downloading is bad anyway, don't want RIAA et al to send their Goons around do ya.

Lets just say if you pay low tax, you get privledges.

im still defending suprnova here...i dont see what suprnova has to do with crap speeds...its the actually torrents problem as long as yours is green...i wouldnt mess around trying to get private trackers...unless its something reallllyyy hard to find

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

i get speeds off suprnova equal to my normal download speeds on most torrents, can take a while to spin up but thats fair enough what more can i ask for?

to the user who mentioned that they where getting a much faster speed of one torrent over the other when both had the same number of seeds and peers i presume that whatever way it worked out the the slower one had seeds with less upload bandwidth or something?

I agree with you ViperVenoM. There is no problem with suprnova. Even with a private tracker you will still have the same problems with speed on different torrents isn't that so Venom. Some torrents will download faster than others. Doesn't matter where you get them from.

The 2 torrent files in the link below where downloaded yesterday from suprnova. One file is downloading at 150KBps and the other at 25KBps, thats 175KBps. I'm on NTL 1.5MB, my max speed is 180KBps. I think thats excellent.

    [URL=https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/21407/8052.JPG[/URL]

Dataisgod makes a good point about the Seed/Peers upload speed.

For example one torrent could have 10 seeders all with upload speed of 1024kbps (120KBps) and another torrent could have 10 seeders all on eircons 512kbps broadband with an upload speed of about 128kbps (15KBps) even worse some seeders could even be on dialup

Maybe Dataisgod will do up some charts by the morning to explain this clearly to the douters ;)

I get full speeds on suprnova all the time ~52KB/s steady, you just have to give it 10-20 minutes before it kicks into top gear.

Exactly what i was trying to say... if you download a brand new torrent you have to expect slow speeds as not many peeps will have it and be sharing... but most torrents are fine dosent matter where you get the link from.

Suprnova is fine and all but hardly ever max's out my connection (1MB)
On the otherhand I get awful speeds with other places :)

Now thats not down to the sites really, but it is down to the amount of people seeding complete files
Suprnova is not the best place for this as its full of newbie's who close downloads when they finish ie: not leaving them seed when complete

    sigh,
don't talk about something you obviously don't know everything about
torrents have legit uses as well, don't believe me?
Have a look at https://shop.linspire.com/shopping/shopping_cartcontents.php (NOTE the digital/bittorrent option of getting the software) to start with
    now stfu!
