I try to open Word 2000 in Xp and I get nothing but a white screen with a message saying "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

HOWEVER, when I open it under a different login username in XP, it works grand. Maybe there's something wrong with my username settings? I tried re-installing it but the sa\me thing happens. Can anyone help?

    Steve

    Yeah it does that,
vague error message with no clue as to what happened,
excel has been doing a variation of that since office 4.3, so don't hold your breath for a rock solid version any time soon.

If (and only if) you have the original media you could go to officeupate.microsoft.com and apply all the patches up to SP3 and the security fixes on top - not sure if it will fix the problem

You could delete your profile while logged in as admin - but that's a lot of work to rebuild desktop / shortcuts / restore files you backed up before deleting user profile.

you could try deleting normal.dot - this sometimes solves some weird problems

I'm not suggesting you reinstall or remove and reinstall - but some info if you do.
[RANT]Microsoft use a different version of English to us. The phrase "remove all" misses a few settings. Count the files and reg entries to be deleted manually in these ... [/RANT]

    Eraser2k eraser97

Eraser2K does NOT work on XP - there is a hack to do this by renaming one of the files. http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/20416/20416.html
Unfortunately, even Eraser2K won't remove every last vestige of Office 2000 from your system; a few Office 2000 registry entries will remain. However, Microsoft claims that these settings are innocuous and don't interfere with regular system operation. The company justifies this shortcoming by claiming that the tool essentially prepares a system for an Office 2000 reinstallation, particularly for situations in which an Office 2000 uninstallation or reinstallation fails to run properly.
If those remaining settings are borked and are inherited you are back to square 0
I tricked the eraser2k.exe into running under Windows XP. Do this by downloading and decompressing the eraser2k.exe as usual. Then, make a copy of the "Offcln9a.opc" file in the same folder but name it "Offcln9.opc". Then, instead of running "Eraser2000.exe" as the readme.txt file says, run "Offcln9.exe". Reboot.
