Prefer my D30 to 300D

I've been using the 300D for a few weeks now and to be honest, I much preferred the D30. Main reason is the whack on autofocus is pretty intense and tends to cause a bit of camera shake, also it just doesn't "feel" good in the hand.

Anyone else gone from a D30 or similar to the 300D and whaddya think?

    I have my D30 for a while now and I know that I wouldn't change it for a 300D!
A 20D, would be a nice upgrade. My wife would like (will have!) a DSLR, I think I would buy a 2nd hand D30 or D60 rather than buying a 300D for her.

The 300D is a nice cheap DSLR camera for someone who can't afford the 20D...

Luckily I still have my D30 and don't plan to part with it. Might have a look see at the 20d though tomorrow.

surely that depends on the lens doesn't it? i've not used a D30 but i've taken sharp shots with a 50mm lens at 1/30th quite easily with fast autofocusing

do you have the battery grip for the d300? i'd agree, without it the camera isn't that good compared with the more pro cameras

Just using the lens supplied as standard with the 300d. Might just take more getting used to.

    The "whack on autofocus"?

    I don't get you.
The shutter doesn't fire until the focus is locked and the split second between those two events is easily enough to steady the camera if you're holding it any way tightly.

Unless you mean the slap of the mirror as it swings up as the shutter opens - that can have an effect at slow shutter speeds (say 1/30 or lower) or above 200mm ish.

But if thats the case then there is a hacked firmware for the 300D which enables mirror lockup and numerous other features (the 300D is basically a 10D in a plastic case with a crippled firmware - well nearly)

The forums (300D etc) at www.dpreview.com are the place for this kind of info - hundreds of owners there.

Personally there is no way I would accept 3 MP (D30) images anymore - the 300D has the EXACT same 6 MP sensor as the old 10D and even that is only comparable to consumer grade ISO 400 film in terms of resolution.
Bring on the 20 MP full frame sensors :)
    /me dreams... for now.

Don't worry about it - that's just my description. I can't explain it any better than that.
