Hello, not sure if im in right forum for this so feel free to move but it seemed the logical choice.

Ive downloaded a few videos (all legally of course) and when i play them they play for a few seconds and then freeze. This seems to be happening with a lot of things on my pc and the same on my laptop. Anyone know what could be causing this? the format for most of them is .avi

I had the same trouble with some avi's too. I installed the DivX codec and it fixed it. Although not using the divx player itself, thats now freezing but windows media player isn't freezing anymore so thats good enough for me :)

    Ta for the rep :)

Just thought of something else you could try. I havent tried it myself but there's a program called DivX AntiFreeze (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DivX_AntiFreeze.htm) that could sort you out. Below is a description from the site. It's quite old though so it might not be relevant anymore.

Sometimes video clips contain invalid frames that cause Media Player to freeze the image. Theoretically player should recover from the problem, but it doesn't. So image is freezed permanently until clip position is manually changed (by moving position slider). DivX AntiFreeze avoids such freezings

It's more than likely youe codec. You may have an older version installed. Check out Lenny's thread on this board. I posted links to codec's.

  • Could I suggest the VLC Media Player

It can play avi's without the need of having codecs installed....

You are indeed a wise man JohnK. AntiFreeze works for most of the files i have. I'm about to try the VLC player.

    Cheers folks

And VLC now plays all the files DivX AntiFreeze wouldn't fix.
