Well its looks like theres a product to make your Playstation2 a region free player. I lifted this news from www.dvdtimes.co.uk
Datel have released an external card which supposedly turns the Sony Playstation 2 into a Region-free DVD player. The card itself plugs into a free memory-card slot and bypasses the machine's region protection.

Using both the supplied CD and card, it is possible to play DVDs from regions other than the native region supported by the Playstation 2.

DVD Region X is available now retailing at a very reasonable £19.99. More information can be found on the Datel website.

Especially for Dre that one smile.gif

Lads, you say it is terrible dvd player?

I use it as a DVD player, Ive a dolby surround sound tv, and using the 3 colored wires, (i dont know the techincal word for it) i gives me a very satisfactory dolby dound, crisp picture, more than 'home cinenma' quality.
I've watched dvd's on other peoples DVD players (dedicated) and not seen any difference really, and I've watched DVD's on software renderded playback, and found it lacking.

I actually use it more a dvd player, than a games console, since it got a new pc, and it looks kewl ontop of the video too.

I use mine as a dvd playre as well mostly and I have been most pleased with it.
crisp picture, flawless sound.
I don't know why everyone knocks it...

I thought it was pants - if you wanted to change the picture resolution from regular 4:3 to widescreen, you have to stop the disc playing and then change. Likewise for the audio options.
It's control interface is a joke (I want a remote not a controller with wire to trip on).

Anyway, that little nugget is my brother's next birthday pressie smile.gif

Never mind the fact that it's bloody appalling quality as a DVD player when compared to proper players (on decent rig of course, if you're watching a 20" Crappybrand TV you'll never notice the difference), the fact that it can't do RGB playback is a pretty damn big nail in the coffin...

Look, it's a games console, happens to play DVD's aswell, Overall a decent bundle I think but it's not a real 'Home Cinema' solution.
I know a lot of people are slagging PS2's ****less because they didnt live up to the hype (What does), and because of the rabid brand loyalty holding it's userbase together. But still it's a decent machine, just waiting for those *******s at Sony to get off their asses and give their users the software they need to actually justify buying it.
I don't have a PS2 by the way, I'm not a console person, my 2 brothers do though.

As for DVD playback it's about average for an entry level player. It just obviously depends on what you compare it to. I have a middle of the range one at home (Pioneer 717) and there is no way the PS2 comes close to it for image/sound quality. I'd say it's on par with software playback on a PC - not a bad thing in itself, but if you really want to get the most from DVD's get a dedicated player and use SVHS or Component to connect to your TV (The fact that the PS2 ships with composite video connectors only is bad enough).

Not meaning to sound (too) mean or anything...

but if you went out and bought a real dvd player like a denon (something high end) you'd see an incredible difference. Especially on a dolby tv too. I think sony's problem is that they tried to make the ps2 do everything for everybody. If they had thought about it some more I'm sure they could have put a totally kick ass dvd player into it (and actually included a remote control in the box - nice one sony)
