Help wanted - making clip show from dvds

Sorry if this has been asked before. I want to make a clip show from DVDs I have. Since there's about 40 dvds, I don't want to rip the whole of each DVD to my hard drive. Is there a tool, that will let me play through a DVD, select what little piece I want, then extract that piece only?
