Suspected "mad cow disease" patient in Dublin

A man in his early 20's is currently under observation in A Dublin hospital for what appears to be varient Creutzfeld Jacob disease (vCJD), a prion disease similar to Scrapie and BSE (also known as mad cow disease).

This has large implications for Ireland after recent research has indicated that, contrary to original belief, most people are susceptable to vCJD.

While its not confirmed yet, the outlook is grim and while we are not at as much risk as the UK, who have had 144 cases so far, epidemiologists fear that there could be as many as 20 vCJD cases in the near future.

Because of the long time frame before the onset of disease, its quite difficult to predict, however it should be noted that current stringent guidelines on the Irish beef market render our beef quite safe.

vCJD has know known cure and is fatal in all cases. Although it is primarily linked to the consumption of infected meat, life time vegetarians and a vegan have fallen prey to vCJD.

speaking of which do they test for prions in the USA, as I've heard that the main reasons they haven't as many detected cases is because they wern't testing.

The earliest and most compelling evidence of HIV infection is that of an adult male who lived in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dr. David Ho and Dr. Tuofu Zhu of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York City and Andre Nahmias of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia recently succeeded in isolating the virus from a plasma sample taken from the man in 1959
