Er... I can't see this as a taboo subject myself. So here's my 5c worth...

I think in Ken Bigley's case they made (al-Zarqawi) a big mistake - they are now up there with al-Sadr... but they are the nutters and probably don't give a rat's ass.

Last news I heard was: it was unknown which group abducted her. What ever group it was I would say her chances are a lot better than Ken Bigley's (being a woman) - speaking fluent Arabic maybe damaging to her though - if she does die - it will because of this (more than likely)

At the end of the day I can't see peace in Iraq for at least 3 years (after the allies move out)

actually i'd say his family and firends lost out more than the Irish people there, I'm irish and really his death didn't have a negative impact on my life at all.

if you're interested in the whole abduction, iraq "situation" then check out the "baghdad year zero" thread in politics. the article is pretty long, but it's a very very good read and a good sum up of the situation over there atm. The iraqi's aren't happy about what's being done to their country, and some of them are resorting to extreme methods to let this be known. Naturally, no one is listening and the problem is getting worse.. but hey, they're all terrorists so who cares.

fair enough I see your point on the stuff cos shes a woman, but what if they do behead her, do you think us as a nation UK will finally get our sh!t together
and get the fck out of there. I was more intrigued if she mattered to you cos she married an Iraqui man, so you may not of cared as much, or are you really gutted over there as we was over Ken?

I know its contraversial, but thats what message boards are for to get your opinions out on...
    thanks for the reply

Is Margaret Hassan really Irish? Aljazeera reports that she's a "a British-born Iraqi national":

Sarcasm noted - but I really have to say I was kinda impressed by Ken Loach's interview on Sky yesterday - He more or less stated that the US and UK are an illegal force of occupation and people who shoot rocket grenades at them are not terrorists, but patriots.

I think he was wrong however. Iraq was always an artificial country - after WWII there should have been a Kurdistan. (Maybe not including parts of Turkey). A Sunni northern state and a Shia southern state. The British and Americans are both to blame for this not happening- sole reason - OIL.

Now peace-keeping occupation forces are inevitable - but it would be better if they were not British or American.

During my recent holiday I spent about an hour convincing some Malaysians that Ireland was not part of Britain, and was in fact independent. To her captors I'm afraid she is British actually.

Well I would be gutted if they did behead her. Marrying an Iraqi might have held some prejudice in the '50s or something. But I would be gutted with anyone being beheaded - probably moreso with links to home.

I can see Ken would strike home more...

If I knew her in Dublin this would be worse alright.

My own opinion (totally political) is that the sooner the UK pull out and let UN forces move in - the better. The black watch guard etc. can wear a UN insignia and not get targetted like the US troops - US troops under the same insignia will not last as long - they will become obvious as US troops quickly.

    Likewise the Irish Guards...

The command and deportment of troops is where the Americans will make themselves obvious while incognito.

I think the official line is born in ireland, she has family in Kerry somewhere, but she has dual British and Iraqi citizenship. When she married an Iraqi becoming a citizen was mandatory.

Her family are originally from Kenmare here in Kerry, where her sister still lives.
