hey i need some advice, im setting up a few public computers, and i only want people being able to access what i have in a specific folder

(specific programs shortcuts such as:, word, excel, internet explorer, ICQ, etc etc), i want the start button off limits, and also a way to stop people downloading and installing programs to the computer any suggestions?

so it would be like in a cyber café type software, but just basic and freeware

    cheers
    luke

What OS will you be using? will they be using network logons from a Windows server?

It should be easy enough to configure this with group profiles if you are using a Windows 2000 or 2003 server....

Xp you can block downloading by using the security tab under tools /internet options/ can't remember exact name but there is a option in there to block it-

Then all you have to do is remove/hide the security tab - by doing the following

    Remove Security Tab
    KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    DWORD: NoSecurityTab = 1

Set to 0 is you want it back again- user won't be able to download- unless they are smart and use the Ip adress of site in browser and download it that way- but that is another story ;)

Yeah, your best bet is to create a new default user (that can't be logged out by the user), and do some serious locking down on the account. That's if you're using NT, XP or 2k of course.

Have a chat to Net Cafes. Most of them use one of two methods - disallowing programs from being installed using software, or simply reimaging their machines each night.
