Basically, i'm sick of my computer slowing to a crawl whenever i print a document. Whats causing this, and how can i fix it. Its an Epson Stylus Colour 740.

I've already tried a few different drivers, but they all seem to be made for win98 or win2k, and are quite a few years old. Its connected via a parallel port aswell. Any ideas?

Sounds like a spooling problem, in the drivers for the printer there should be an option to "Spool print jobs so that the program finishes printing faster" or similar. You should also check your event logs for any spooler related warnings or errors.

Some more info... when i print, the "system" process takes up as much CPU time as is available, and tries to take more. It just turns into a hog.

I'll try the spooling thingy now.

I have the same problem with my epson 460.

Basically the old printers wreek havoc with windows
    XP.
    sometimes things dont print.
sometimes the printer starts printing when you turn it on.

From what I read, there simply is no solution bar buying a
    new USB printer.

For people like us we are simply stuck with poor drivers.
    boo. :o
