    Use Ad-Ware 6 and Ad-Watch 6 from Lavasoft.

Also if you have Windows XP, upgrade to SP2. It installs an automatic pop-up blocker into IE also notifies u of Active X controls!

    Firefox!
It's a great web browser and is superiourto IE in almost everyway. It has a built in popup blocker that's turned on my default. The only thing IE has going for it is that because if it's popularity most web sites/apps were only desinged for it.

Some programs cause popups from the inside, and then spam you with ads for popup blockers...

so get spywareblaster , spybot and a good antivirus too.

GAIN is pure eveil, if you check processes you'll notice GMT.exe is using 10MB+ of ram, get yourself Spybot 1.3 (updated) and Adaware SE (updated) between the two of them you'll clear off everything,

Then stop using IE and don't install such crap as KazaaMetiaCenter, Gator, Datemanager etc
    ;)

Its not always the browsers fault, if you install the free pro version of Divx I believe it installs GAIN..

Yeah but in fairness how many sites are totally un-usable when using FF compared to IE? :D (not many)

If your worried about not being able to view all sites using Firefox download the "View in IE" extension - it takes all of 2 seconds from the mozilla.org website and gives you the option to right click on a misbehaving page and load up that address in IE (which will still be on your computer even if remove the shortcuts obviously!)

the only sites i now know that don't work with FF is eircom.net's music store (the last time i checked it didn't) and windowsupdate.com

i have though came across really piss poor coded sites that display horribley in FF and look a mess

Well there's unfortunatley the issue of plugins...

Which plugins don't work in Firefox?

Soungs like you're infected with some Spyware - there's no point installing the google toolbar or anything else until you first get rid of the spyware.

Google for AdAware or SpyBoy - download, install and run to remove the spyware.

Then go get firefox or the google toolbar :)

With regard to pages not working with Firefox, it's not so much that sites 'just don't work', more like they don't display properly, some text might be a little to the left or something like that. There is only one site I've found that doesn't work with Firefox is ... Slashdot! I kid you not. Slashdot. (For those who don't know what slashdot is (shame!), it's a very popular technology and computer news site. It's very anti-microsoft and pro-open source. This is the place where people will have parties and pat themselves on the back when Firefox gets 1% more popular. And it doesn't display properly with Firefox!) To be more precise, it works OK with Firefox on Windows, but the only problem is when you look at it with Firefox on Linux. FFS! </rant>

The google toolbar isn't available for Firefox. Probably because Firefox has a goolge toolbar built in. :)

What plugins? The Java and Flash plugins work fine. Is there any other plugins out there? (Besides the security hole that is ActiveX)

Ok I had a quick check around and all I can find is .class not working - excuse my ignorance here - that's java right? I dunno why FF can't install it for me it never finds suitable plugins. I've just hopped onto the mozilla site and no sign of the d/l.

I'll google for it but if you have a URL throw it my way please.

    My mistake I guess.

Edit: It's ok I got it - and I'm sure Sun have something online for it too now that I think about it. :D

Hmm . . . I'm on FF 1.0PR on Gentoo Linux and Slashdot seems ok. Then again, the HTML produced by Slashcode is absolutely disgusting.

Firefox tbh. For plugins the only ones you need are Java or Flash Player. If you want QuickTime etc. just install it and it shall detect Firefox [might be under the name Mozilla/Netscape] on your system.

Flash and Java are the only two you need really.

Eitherway, the Fox beats the pants off IE and Opera.

Hmm.. Maybe it's me. 0.10.1 on FC2. It only sometimes looks funny. It looks like all the stories in the middle are shifted about 1 or 2 character widths to the left, ontop of the 'Sections' section. It's not a major issue, it's just my definition of irony.

You can't try to validate the markup used by using validator.w3.org/. Slashdot have blocked off the w3 bot from access their page. Weird...

Tried it just for the fum (i.e. saved the home page) - 134 validation errors - no wonder they block the validator bot!

As for the rendering: For me, the stories appear close to the 'Sections' part but don't overlap. Screenshot attached.

    Good point. :o

Seriously though I have used Opera for years and am a big fan. I downloaded Firefox recently as I've heard good things about it. Haven't installed it yet though.
