Unit Tensor

    Hello,

I've a question, tbh I haven't much of a notion about tensors as I've yet to study them but something I'm doing at the minute needs me to know a little... hopefully a small little...

Basically I'm dealing with crystals, specifically centrosymmetric ones with different miller indices (110) (100) (001) etc... etc...

A laser will get fired into these crystals at an azimuthal angle of say chi or some such. I need to define a unit tensor ... and I havn't a notion where to start...

I don't expect you to understand really what I'm saying as I haven't phrased it very well and dont really know what I'm talking about but any small tips/pointers would be really helpful... just to get me started ;)

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, Chump.
It's many years since I had to deal with tensors. I never saw any definition beyond " a tensor is a quantity that obeys the following transformation laws ...." Can anybody give me a definition in plain English?
