if the mp3s are all tagged then you can use... http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

it doesn't go to cddb (that I know of, not checked), but it can name the files based on the tagging info

What do you mean they're unnamed? They have no tags or the filenames themselves are meaningless? You can get/write a tagger program to use the file names as the tags if that's what you're aiming for.

I used Musicmatch http://www.musicmatch.com to standardise the tags on the 3000 MP3s I have on my IPOD.

Just as a matter of interest, what naming convention do people use?

    I like:

Artist - Album - Track Number - Track Title

because stuff is sorted like in a CD shop.

    Even better would be:

Artist - Year - Album - Track Number - Track Title
Artist - (Year) Album - Track Number - Track Title

I like artists named with surname first, e.g.

McLachlan, Sarah - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - 01 - Possession

I find this to be quite the ultimate - it's very powerful:

    http://www.albert.nu/programs/renamer/main.htm

As for the naming convention i like:

    Artist -TRACK- Song

If it's an album by a single artist otherwise :

    TRACK - Artist - Song

That way a drag and drop still gives you proper track order :)

    Later,
    James.

by unmamed i mean when the tag info is displayed on a mp3 player or winamp. it will say something like
track 01 for the song name and maybe the artists and album name in one line for the artist name.

i use the renamer program that jamesB suggested and he is dead rights - it is by fair the best renaming program i have ever used - for mp3s and any other files.
and best of all - its free!!

If you have huge amount of mp3s, I found Helium2 to be good: http://www.helium2.com/

It can rename/retag from tags/filenames/freedb.org plus sort into folders automatically. I think it cost $20 which was worth it to save hours of typing/programing,

I recently got a program called the godfather. It renames, tages etc etc.
You can batch tag/rename the files in many ways.
Took alittle getting used to but it works great

I have found mp3bookhelper to be much more useful then musicbrainz

Note: it is a Windows only app

    Artist - Track - Song - [Album]

    So

Soundgarden -7- Black Hole Sun - [SuperUnknown]

    c:\music\%artist%\(%year%) %album_name%\%Tracknumber%. %Tracktitle%

    i.e. c:\music\Muse\(1999) Showbiz\01 - Sunburn.mp3

I have a load of mp3s some of filenames, some have tags. DO any of these apps analyse the mp3 and correct the tag/filename for you? Musicmatch tries but is wrong about 60% of the time in my experience. MusicBrainz seems to be the only one of these that does this. The rest are simply batch renamers.
