    Hi all,

I've downloaded Norton Anti virus....try to run live update and get the error message..."cant return callback"...

basically what i need to know is... will a router affect an AV program from downloading/connecting

(or would it be windows service pack 2 ?)

    Thanks

WinXP SP2 changed the built-in firewall settings to on by default so your configurartion may have changed when you installed it.

Basically, it depends what port number the AV software tries to call home over. If Norton AV requires a port that your router doesn't have open then you'll have to unblock it outgoing. I don't know off-hand what port Norton AV uses.

    Hi Leeroybrown

I disabled the firewall on winXP and retryed, but it made no difference.

Its strange as the AV will update this new worm detection that Norton AV 2005 has and some other updates, but not the virus definitions....ill try and find out the port number though and see if it makes a difference...

    Thanks

I would be surprised if Norton AV used a strange port for downloads. You should also consider the possibility that you could already have some form of worm/.malware on your system that is preventing you from downloading live updates.

It might be an idea to manually download the updates from the Norton site and apply them. You could also consider booting into Safe Mode to disable any processes that could be causing this problem.

the system is brand new and never connected to the net except for the AV download attempt
